Observational Study
The association between smartphone addiction and thumb/wrist pain: A cross-sectional study.
Many smartphone users experience pain in the thumb/wrist. This pain can be due to certain types of hand injuries as well as inflammation of the extensor pollicis brevis and the abductor pollicis longus tendon sheaths, known as De Quervain tenosynovitis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between smartphone addiction and wrist/thumb pain and to determine the severity of the pain, as well as to calculate the prevalence of De Quervain tenosynovitis among medical students at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah. ⋯ Two hundred fifty-seven (66.4%) participants were smartphone addicts; 74 (19.1%) had a positive Finkelstein test. There was a significant correlation between smartphone addiction and high PRWHE scores (P = .036). Our study found the prevalence of smartphones addiction among university students to be high (66%), furthermore a correlation between heavy smartphones usage and hand pain was found which indicates that heavy usage of these devices can cause subclinical effects on the human hand.

In recent years, deep venous thrombosis (DVT) after spine surgery has received extensive attention, but perioperative prevalence of DVT in patients undergoing percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) is lacking. To assess the perioperative prevalence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing PKP with routinely applied ultrasonography. We reviewed 1113 consecutive patients undergoing PKP from January 2014 to August 2017. ⋯ The total incidence of perioperative DVT diagnosed with ultrasonography in patients undergoing PKP was 3.6%, of which only 0.54% was symptomatic cases. It is necessary to assess DVT using ultrasonography during the perioperative procedure of PKP, especially for high-risk patients. Level of evidence: Level IV.

Patients with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD) are at risk of acute exacerbation. Diaphragm muscle is classically highly solicited in COPD exacerbation. ⋯ Despite a normal diaphragm thickening, diaphragm motion during inspiration is reduced in acute COPD exacerbation. These apparently discrepant findings may be explained by the alterations of the respiratory mechanics during COPD exacerbations, which should be considered when evaluating the diaphragmatic function by imaging.

Review Meta Analysis
Evidence on factors influencing contraceptive use and sexual behavior among women in South Africa: A scoping review.
Contraceptive use and sexual health behavior remain a prominent public health concern in South Africa (SA). Despite many government interventions, unintended pregnancies and termination of pregnancies remain relatively high. This review aimed to map evidence on factors influencing contraceptive use and sexual behavior in SA. ⋯ There remains a necessity for improving educational programs aimed at transferring knowledge on contraceptives and sexual behavior to both women and their male counterparts, alongside the public health systems' improvements.
