To investigate the healthcare expenditures and length of stay (LOS) of sepsis-related hospitalizations in Taiwan. This is a retrospective claim database study. Data were obtained from the two-million-sample longitudinal health and welfare database (LHWD). ⋯ Both expenditures and LOS were found to increase with sepsis severity. This study provides an updated and better understanding of the costs and LOS of sepsis-related hospitalizations in Taiwan. It was found that ward fees and medicine fees were the major components of hospital costs.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is characterized by ossification along the anterolateral aspect of at least 4 contiguous vertebral bodies. A fracture involving the fused vertebra in patients with DISH often leads to severe instability and spinal cord injury. Spinal metastasis (Mets) and DISH can coexist in elderly patients and increase their risk of pathologic vertebral fractures. However, there are few reports on concomitant spinal Mets and DISH. ⋯ Instrumentation surgery should be performed in patients with DISH who develop spinal Mets even if there is no apparent instability.

Case Reports
A case report of recurrent acute pancreatitis associated with life threatening atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a thrombotic microangiopathy defined by the sudden onset of hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury (AKI). HUS is categorized as either typical, caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli infection, or atypical HUS (aHUS), usually complement mediated or secondary to systemic disease. We describe a rare case of aHUS in an adult male patient with recurrent acute pancreatitis. ⋯ Recurrent pancreatitis is suggested as the etiology of atypical HUS in this patient and this condition should be recognized and treated in a timely manner for optimal clinical outcomes.

Enchondromas arise from cartilaginous cells derived from the physis that persists throughout development. They are difficult to diagnose and are often discovered on radiographs after a trauma. ⋯ Our case of pathologic mallet fracture was misdiagnosed as a simple fracture, suggesting that the mechanism of fracture and radiological diagnosis should be carefully considered.
