To assess the association of the interaction between the rs9619311 and rs402007 polymorphisms and smoking with essential hypertension (EH) in a Chinese Han population. ⋯ A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type motifs 1 rs402007 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 rs9619311 polymorphisms are associated with EH in a Chinese Han population, and there was a positive interaction among rs402007, rs9619311, and smoking.

Genetic mutation analysis of hereditary spastic paraplegia: A retrospective study.
Hereditary spastic paraplegias are heterogeneous disorders with diversified clinical manifestations, and genetic testing is important for the diagnosis and typing of hereditary spastic paraplegias. Gene panel sequencing containing 55 hereditary spastic paraplegias-related genes was performed to screen the pathogenic genes for hereditary spastic paraplegias. Sanger sequencing was adopted to validate if the family member carried the same pathogenic gene as the proband. ⋯ The L1CAM gene is the causative gene for the SPG1 X-linked recessive-hereditary spastic paraplegias. Our data confirm the genetic heterogeneity of hereditary spastic paraplegias, and SPG4/SPAST were the most frequent forms. The pathogenicity of the novel mutations is worth to be further investigated.

A numerous studies have reported that obese patients (OP) are easily to have type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although a variety of managements are available to treat such disorder, their efficacy is still limited. Previous studies have reported that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSGT) can benefit OP with T2DM. However, no study specifically and systematically explores this topic. Thus, this study will assess the efficacy and complications of LSGT for the management of OP with T2DM. ⋯ INPLASY202040128.

Depression is common after patients are discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU) and has a negative impact on quality of life and mortality. There is inconsistent information about ICU admission and the risk of depression. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between the risk of depression and length of ICU stay. ⋯ For patients with depression after discharge from the ICU, the most common primary diagnosis was intracerebral hemorrhage. There is a risk of depression after ICU discharge, and the incidence of depression may be higher among patients between 20 and 49 years old. The risk of depression was U-shaped, with higher risks associated with ICU stays of 1 to 3 days and more than 15 days.

A retrospective study of probiotics for the treatment of children with antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
This retrospective study aimed to explore the benefits and safety of probiotics (live combined Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecium granules with multivitamines) for the treatment of children with antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). A total of 72 children with AAD were analyzed in this study. Of these, 36 children received routine treatment plus probiotics, and were assigned to a treatment group. ⋯ In addition, no adverse events were documented in this study. The findings of this study demonstrated that probiotics may provide promising benefit for children with AAD. Further studies are still needed to warrant theses findings.
