Case Reports
Recovery of visual field defects following vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy: A case report.
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) may lead to severe visual impairment, and visual field (VF) loss in such patients has been reported. Vitrectomy is performed in PDR cases complicated with either vitreous hemorrhage or tractional retinal detachment to restore their visual acuity. However, its effect on VF defects is limited in data. Herein, we report the recovery of VF defects following vitrectomy in a patient with PDR. ⋯ Vitrectomy potentially allows recovery of VF defects in patients with PDR.

Observational Study
Risk factors of postoperative complications following total knee arthroplasty in Korea: A nationwide retrospective cohort study.
The number of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is gradually increasing and there is also increase in postoperative complications. The patient's demographic, socio-economic factors, hospital and clinical factors are all factors that can influence postoperative complications. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with complications following TKA in a large national cohort. ⋯ In summary, male, procedure type (bilateral, revision), LOS (≥35 days), and use of transfusion were shown to be risk factors of postoperative complications following TKA.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has caused a worldwide pandemic. Control measures differ among countries and have a varying degree of effectiveness, which requires assessment. To evaluate the effectiveness of public health interventions of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Guangzhou by 3 periods according to interventions: January 7 to 22 (no intervention), January 23 to February 23 (implemented intensive interventions), and February 24 to May 17 (the normalization mode of COVID-19 prevention and control). ⋯ Under prospective dynamic observation, close contacts turned into infected cases could provide a spectrum of COVID-19 cases from real-world settings. The lockdown of Wuhan and closed-loop management of people arriving Guangzhou were effective in halting the spread of the COVID-19 cases to Guangzhou. The spread of COVID-19 was successfully controlled in Guangzhou by social distancing, wearing a face mask, handwashing, disinfection in key places, mass testing, extensive contact tracing, and strict quarantine of close contacts.

A high-cholesterol diet increases the risk of bladder cancer. The purpose of this nationwide longitudinal population-based retrospective cohort study is to investigate whether hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for bladder cancer. Data from Taiwan National Health Insurance Database were analyzed. ⋯ However, the risk of bladder cancer was not significantly different between women in the hyperlipidemia cohort and those in the non-hyperlipidemia cohort. Subgroup analyses further revealed that the risk of bladder cancer was significantly higher in men aged 20 to 39 years in the hyperlipidemia cohort than in those in the non-hyperlipidemia cohort (adjusted HR = 5.45, P = .029). In conclusion, hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for bladder cancer in young adult men.

The G protein-coupled receptor 116 (GPR116) is an adhesion subtype of the G protein-coupled receptor family and has been reported to be involved in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Moreover, it has been shown to predict poor prognosis in breast and colorectal cancers. However, little is known about the role of GPR116 in gastric cancer (GC). ⋯ Multivariate Cox analysis indicated that GPR116 overexpression was an independent prognostic indicator in patients with GC (HR = 1.855, 95% CI 1.021-3.370, P = .043). Enrichment analysis showed that GPR116 co-expression genes were mainly involved in extracellular matrix-receptor interaction, focal adhesion, cell adhesion, PI3K-Akt signaling, DNA replication, and cell cycle pathways. In conclusion, GPR116 was highly expressed in GC tissues and associated with poor prognosis in patients with GC, Thus GPR116 may be a novel prognostic marker and a potential therapeutic target for GC treatment.
