Reducing the burden of limited capacity on medical practitioners and public health systems requires a time-dependent characterization of hospitalization rates, such that inferences can be drawn about the underlying causes for hospitalization and patient discharge. The aim of this study was to analyze non-medical risk factors that lead to the discharge of trauma patients. This retrospective cohort study includes trauma patients who were treated in Switzerland between 2011 and 2018. ⋯ The number of occupied beds is a positive, independent risk factor for discharge in trauma patients; as the number of occupied beds increases at any given time, so does the risk for discharge. The number of beds occupied represents an independent non-medical risk factor for discharge. Capacity determines triage of hospitalized patients and therefore might increase the risk of premature discharge.

Somatic mutations in the oncogenes of the epidermal growth factor receptor signaling pathway play vital roles in colorectal carcinogenesis and have been closely linked with clinical resistance to monoclonal therapy. In this study, we have analyzed the mutation frequencies of 5 genes and compared the genetic findings with clinicopathological variables in order to determine diagnostically relevant alterations and compare these findings with those of other studies In our Sanger sequencings, KRAS (exons 2, 3, and 4), NRAS (exons 2, 3, and 4), PIK3CA (exons 9 and 20), BRAF (exon 15), AKT1 (exon 2) genes, and microsatellite instability (MSI) status were analyzed using an ABI 3500 analyzer in a cohort of 58 Romanian colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent surgical resection at Emergency County Clinical Hospital in Constanța, Romania. In our series, mutation rates of KRAS, BRAF, PIK3CA, and AKT1 genes were 39.63%, 8.62%, 6.88%, and 3.44%, respectively. ⋯ Moreover, PIK3CA mutation tends to be located in the proximal segment of the colon and to be well/moderately differentiated compared to wild-type tumors. In conclusion, the assessment of these mutations suggests that CRC patients from southeast Romania exhibit a mutation profile similar to other populations. These results could contribute to creating a better method of qualifying patients for molecularly targeted therapies and obtaining better screening strategies.

The incidence of portal and mesenteric venous calcifications in patients with cirrhosis has rarely been reported. It is also very difficult to determine the vascular lesions in preoperative imaging examination. The liver cirrhosis patients associated with portal venous calcification have high postoperative complications and mortality, but poor prognosis. ⋯ Calcification in the portal vein system is extremely rare, and always occurs in patients with long-standing liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension gastroesophageal varices and splenomegaly. The presence of portal vein calcification on computed tomography may be a sign of portal vein thrombosis, which may result in a difficult transplantation, and poor prognosis.

Psoriasis is a serious non-communicable, chronic immune-inflammatory mediated disease affecting about 125 million people worldwide. Its effects go beyond skin manifestation. Through genome-wide association studies, the caspase recruitment domain family member 14 (CARD14) gene and other gene variants have been implicated to have an association with Psoriasis, and as we move towards individualized therapy the discovery of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is of great importance. ⋯ Bioinformatics analysis showed that rs144475004 located on the exon led to an amino acid change from aspartate to histidine. On the other hand, results of haplotype-based association analysis showed that 2 haplotypes (CARD14-1 and CARD14-2) were protective haplotypes of the disease (P < .05, OR = 0.18~0.38, 95%CI = 0.05~0.88), the frequencies in healthy controls and patients was 6.96% and 1.49%, respectively. CARD14 gene is associated with susceptibility to psoriasis vulgaris in the Hainan Han population.

We aimed to compare static and dynamic balance parameters and health quality parameters in ballerina and non-ballerina adolescents with hallux valgus deformity. ⋯ In conclusion, the results of this study show that ballerinas have better single-limb and closed-eye balance than sedentary individuals with HV deformities.
