Vitamin D deficiency is a common health problem among adults in Saudi Arabia, particularly females. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, and cognitive decline. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, awareness and practice of vitamin D deficiency among female students in Jazan University as well as to determine the sociodemographic related factors. ⋯ Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models demonstrated a significant association between knowledge, and residence, and source of information (odds ratios = 3.48 and 2.79, respectively, P < .05). Most respondents had a basic understanding of vitamin D, vitamin D insufficiency, and the environmental and dietary factors contributing to it. Given the findings obtained, cognitive interventions need to be carried out.

Acute severe hypoglycemia immediately following anesthesia induction is a rare but life-threatening complication that is frequently underdiagnosed due to insufficient awareness. Among the various physiological processes influenced by opioids, alterations in blood glucose levels induced by opioids are a side effect that is commonly overlooked. The significance of this report lies in emphasizing the neglected association between opioids and hypoglycemia and highlighting the importance of close glucose monitoring to prevent hypoglycemic events in the perioperative setting. ⋯ A precipitous and rapid decline in blood glucose following anesthesia induction is extremely uncommon. When a clinical anesthesiologist detects an abnormally low bispectral index during general anesthesia, hypoglycemia should be suspected. Instituting glucose monitoring in these situations can enable a timely diagnosis, forestalling the onset of life-threatening severe hypoglycemia.

Diabetic neuropathy, including autonomic neuropathy is a serious complication related to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). The vagus nerve (VN) is the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, and since diabetic neuropathy manifests first in longer nerves, the VN is commonly affected in early diabetic autonomic neuropathy. The use of high-resolution ultrasound for peripheral and cranial nerve imaging has significantly increased over the past 2 decades. ⋯ The bilateral VN cross-sectional areas were similar in both cohorts. Additionally, no correlation was seen between the VN cross-sectional areas, demographics, or clinical data of T2D. Our study demonstrated normal VN cross-sectional areas in patients with T2D without any significant relation with the patients' demographic or clinical data.

This study aimed to explore key genes as potential biomarkers for colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis and prognosis in order to improve their clinical utility. To identify and screen candidate genes involved in CRC carcinogenesis and disease progression, we downloaded the microarray datasets GSE143939, GSE196006, and GSE200427 from the GEO database and applied the GEO2R tool to obtain differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between colorectal cancer tissue samples and normal tissue samples. Differentially expressed genes were analyzed using the DAVID online database for gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway enrichment analyses. ⋯ Fifteen key genes were identified, and bioprocess analyses showed that these genes were mainly enriched in cell cycle, cell division, mitotic spindle, and tubulin binding processes. It was found that CDK1, CEP55, MKI67, and TOP2A may be involved in CRC cancer invasion and recurrence. The pivotal genes identified in this study contribute to our understanding of the molecular and pathogenic mechanisms of CRC carcinogenesis and progression, and provide possible biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of CRC.

To determine current research objectives and predict future trends in studies on the relationship between genetics and major depressive disorder (MDD). We collected the publications in the last 20 years (2003-2023) related to genetics and MDD in the Web of Science database, and applied Citespace to assess the knowledge mapping. The number of manuscripts about genetics and MDD totaled 9200, with a faster increase after 2013. ⋯ Based on a 20-year scientometric investigation, we know the USA, China, and Germany have emerged as the important research forces in this discipline. The strongest collaborations between developed countries and renowned institutions are beneficial to the advancement of genetic and MDD research. Serotonin is the strongest citation bursts keyword.
