The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was disruptive to non-COVID-19-related healthcare. This study aimed to compare patient inflows and patient population characteristics at the Hand Surgery Department of JiShuiTan (JST) Hospital in Beijing, a top referral center, in 2020 during the pandemic relative to the same period in 2019. This cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients admitted to the hand surgery ward. ⋯ The top 5 diagnosis types for admitted patients were consistent throughout J-A19 and in January 2020. The rank of the diagnostic type "open injuries of the hand and wrist" increased significantly in February, March, and April of 2020 compared with 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic decreased patient admissions, especially for nonemergency patients, during J-A20.

The potential value of epigenetic DNA methylation in early cancer screening has been demonstrated. Therefore, in this study, we performed QMS-PCR and quantitative reverse transcription PCR on the genes RASSF1A, H4C6, SEPT9, GSTP1, PAX1, SHOX2, and SOX2, which are common in epithelial cancers. We found hypermethylation in RASSF1A, H4C6 and SEPT9. ⋯ The areas under the AUC curve of SEPT9 + H4C6, SEPT9 + RASSF1A and H4C6 + RASSF1A are 0.946, 0.912 and 0.851, respectively. The diagnostic ability of dual gene combination is better than that of single gene combination, among which SEPT9 and H4C6 combination has the best diagnostic effect. In conclusion, our findings suggest that H4C6, RASSF1A, and SEPT9 methylation occur more frequently in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and their detection in nasopharyngeal swabs may be a minimally invasive tool for diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Although preventable; cervical cancer remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in developing countries; thus, early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent its development into invasive cancer. Based on the screening results, diagnostic colposcopy was performed to evaluate women with abnormal Papinocalaou test results, high-risk human papillomavirus DNA positivity, or suspected cervical cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the optimal acetic acid concentration (5% or 8%) for detecting cervical precancerous/cancerous lesions during colposcopy evaluation. ⋯ The probabilities of pathological detection of ≥ CIN2 in the 5% and 8% acetic acid groups were 17.3% and 46.6%, respectively (P < .0001). The enhancement of the efficiency of colposcopy should focus on improving the detectability of precancerous lesions. Given that this study compared the effectiveness of acetic acid concentration in colposcopy diagnostics, it can be considered a leading study in this field.

Previous studies have reported that the occurrence and development of acne are closely associated with immune-inflammatory responses. Mendelian randomization was performed to further assess the causal correlation between 41 inflammatory cytokines and acne. Mendelian two-sample randomization utilized genetic variants for acne from a large open genome-wide association study (1299 cases and 211,139 controls of European ancestry) and inflammatory cytokines from a genome-wide association study abstract containing 8293 healthy participants. ⋯ Our study conclusively identified a causal relationship between il-10 and circulating levels of acne risk and a suggestive link between MIP-1A and SCGF-β and acne. Our study may provide greater insight into the pathogenesis of acne and develop effective management strategies for the clinic. We believe that IL-10, MIP-1A, and SCGF-β could be potential therapeutic targets for acne development.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common malignant tumor of the urinary system. The von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene play an essential role in the tumorigenic pathway of clear cell RCC (ccRCC). This study was aimed to clarify the influence of VHL polymorphisms on ccRCC susceptibility and survival in Central European population. ⋯ A significant associations were found between allele G and genotypes AG and GG of rs779805 in the VHL tumor suppressor gene and increased tumor size, as well as high nuclear grade. Furthermore, a statistically significant association was observed between rs1642742 of VHL gene and low pathological tumor stage and between rs779805 of VHL gene and high pathological tumor stage. Both investigated SNPs can be important prognostic indicators of RCC in the Central European population, because statistically significant associations were observed between evaluated VHL polymorphisms and the best known factors with proven prognostic significance in kidney cancer.
