Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is one of the most common metabolic diseases and is often associated with cervical radiculoplexus neuropathies. Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice for evaluating the brachial plexus, however, the use of ultrasound for its evaluation has increased and has been shown to be an additional reliable method. We aimed to compare the cross-sectional areas of the C5, C6, and C7 nerve roots of the brachial plexus, at the interscalene groove, in asymptomatic patients with T2D to that of an asymptomatic control cohort without T2D. ⋯ The cross-sectional areas of C6 and C7 were significantly smaller in the T2D cohort. Additionally, HbA1c, and FBG levels as well as the duration of T2D were negatively correlated with the C5, C6, and C7 cross-sectional areas. Our study demonstrated smaller brachial plexus nerve root cross-sectional areas in asymptomatic patients with T2D which negatively correlated with HbA1c, and FBG levels as well as the duration of T2D.

This study aimed to compare and analyze the postoperative complications and anal function after 3-stage laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) and conventional posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) in the treatment of moderate to severe anal atresia in children. A total of 27 children with moderate to severe anal atresia who underwent conventional PSARP at the Dongguan Children Hospital between 2007 and 2011 were included in the control group, and 34 children with moderate to severe anal atresia who underwent 3-stage LAARP between 2012 and 2016 were included in the observation group. The incidence of postoperative complications and Kelly score of anal function in the 2 groups were statistically analyzed and the efficacy of the 2 procedures compared. ⋯ There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications such as rectal prolapse, diarrhea, and recurrent fistula between the LAARP group and the PSARP group (P > .05). The Kelly score of anal function was higher in the LAARP group than in the PSARP group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < .05). Compared to conventional PSARP, laparoscopic surgery for moderate to severe anal atresia in children has less complications, improved anal function, and a clear therapeutic impact.

Being the most stable component of energy expenditure, resting metabolic rate (RMR) is usually used in the calculation of energy requirements for athletes. An adequate energy prescription is essential in supporting athlete development. This work aims to develop and validate an equation for calculating energy requirements for Arabic Saudi athletes. ⋯ The second equation used fat-free mass, age, and weight [RMR = 952.828 + (fat-free mass × 10.970)-(Age × 18.648) + (Wt × 10.297)] (R = 0.760 and R2 = 0.577). Validation of the second novel equation increased the prediction of measured RMR to 72.7% and reduced the amount of bias to 138.82 ± 133.18 Kcal. Finally, the new set of equations was designed to fit available resources in clubs and showed up to 72.73% accurate prediction and good agreement with measured RMR by Bland and Altman plots.

Here we assessed the accuracy of O-arm navigation assisted by Wiltse approach to improve based pedicle screw insertion in ankylosing spondylitis combined with thoracolumbar fractures. We then compared it with the freehand pedicle screw insertion technique. The study sample included 32 patients with ankylosing spondylitis combined with thoracolumbar fractures. ⋯ We identified no complications (e.g., infection, VTE/PE, or nerve injury). Moreover, the pedicle screw placement position of the navigation group was better than that of the freehand group (P < .05), and the screw cortical penetration rate was lower than the freehand group (P < .05). During the process of posterior pedicle screw placement, O-arm navigation assisted by the Wiltse approach can significantly reduce operation time, minimize the amount of bleeding volume, and enhance the accuracy of pedicle screw implantation.

Diagnosing cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) can be difficult because of nonspecific symptoms, such as headache and homonymous hemianopia (HH). Herein, we present a case of delayed CVT diagnosis due to nonspecific neurological symptoms and nonprominent lesions in a patient with HH. ⋯ Despite its favorable prognosis, CVT can be challenging to diagnose. CVT should be considered as a differential diagnosis when diagnosing patients who present with headaches accompanied by HH without prominent brain lesions.
