The Heimlich maneuver and chest compression relieve mask ventilation difficulties caused by asymptomatic laryngeal mass: A case report and review of literature.
Some laryngeal masses are typically asymptomatic and easily ignored. However, they can be rare causes of unanticipated difficult airway, leading to critical situations such as "cannot ventilate" or "cannot ventilate and cannot intubate" during anesthesia induction. Inappropriate airway management in such scenarios can have catastrophic consequences for an anesthetized patient. Here we report a case of sudden, unanticipated difficult mask ventilation caused by an asymptomatic supraglottic mass during sedative induction, which was quickly and effectively relieved by the Heimlich maneuver and chest compression. ⋯ Asymptomatic supraglottic masses can cause valve-like upper airway obstruction and lead to unanticipated difficult mask ventilation. The Heimlich maneuver and chest compression may be effective in such critical situations and can serve as an emergency intervention.

Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease. The incidence of overweight and obesity has doubled worldwide since 1980, and nearly one-third of the world population is now classified as overweight or obese. Obesity rates are increasing in all age groups and for both sexes, regardless of geographic region, race, or socioeconomic status, although they are generally higher in older adults and women. ⋯ Although the drug treatment model of modern medicine has a significant therapeutic effect in the treatment of obesity, its adverse effects are also obvious. Acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine treatment of obesity has prominent advantages in terms of clinical efficacy, and its clinical safety is higher, with fewer adverse reactions. The combination of acupuncture and medicine in the treatment of obesity is worth exploring.

Mitochondrial DNA is implicated in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) development. We aimed to identify valuable mtDNAs that contribute to the development of HCM. Differentially expressed mitochondrial DNAs (DEMGs) between HCM and controls were screened. ⋯ Meanwhile, 49 down-regulated pathways were enriched such as the toll-like signaling pathway and natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity pathway. The 6 gene-based mRNA-TF-miRNA networks included other 133 TFs and 18 miRNAs. Six DEMGs in HCM, including PDK4, MGST1, TOMM40, LYPLAL1, GATM, and CPT1B, can be indicative of HCM prognosis or disease progression.

Laparoscopic radical surgery for locally advanced T4 transverse colon cancer and prognostic factors analysis: Evidence from multi-center databases.
The safety and efficacies of laparoscopic radical procedures are still controversial for locally advanced pathological T4 (pT4) TCC (transverse colon cancer). Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the oncologic and perioperative outcomes and to recognize the prognostic factors in radical resection for pT4 TCC derived from multi-center databases. 314 patients with TCC who underwent radical resection between January 2004 and May 2017, including 139 laparoscopic resections and 175 open resections, were extracted from multicenter databases. Oncological as well as perioperative outcomes were investigated. ⋯ These findings underscore the significance of differentiation and N classification as key determinants of patient outcomes in this context. Overall, the laparoscopic approach may offer advantages in terms of shorter hospital stays, while maintaining comparable oncological outcomes. Laparoscopic radical procedure can gain a couple of short-term benefits without reducing long-term oncological survival for patients with pT4 TCC.

The molecular underpinnings of pediatric asthma present avenues for targeted therapies. A deeper exploration into the significance of differentially expressed autophagy-related genes (DE-ARGs) and their interactions with the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA)-microRNA (miRNA)-mRNA network may offer insights into the pathogenesis of pediatric asthma. DE-ARGs were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus and the Human Autophagy Database. ⋯ Moreover, the quantitative real-time PCR data revealed a pronounced upregulation of Fas cell surface death receptor. The identification of 4 DE-ARGs, especially Fas cell surface death receptor, has shed light on their potential pivotal role in the pathogenesis of pediatric asthma. The established ceRNA network provides novel insights into the autophagy mechanism in asthma and suggests promising avenues for the development of potential therapeutic strategies.
