Randomized Controlled Trial
The clinical effects of two non-invasive ventilation modes on premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome: A randomized controlled trial.
To compare the safety and effectiveness of nasal noninvasive high- frequency oscillatory ventilation (NHFOV) and duo positive airway pressure (DuoPAP) applications in preterm babies with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). ⋯ The endpoints of PaO2, PaCO2 and OI and complications of IVH, NEC, BPD and Apnea, and did not reveal any statistical differences between NHFOV and DuoPAP during the respiratory support in preterm babies with RDS.

Rheumatic diseases (RD) are chronic diseases that significantly affect the lives of patients. Assessing health outcomes through a patient-reported outcome measurement information system (PROMIS) is essential for RD management. Moreover, these tend to be less favorable among individuals than among the rest of the population. ⋯ Moreover, RD individuals reported lower physical functioning (β = -5.4; 95% CI = -6.50, -4.24) and social interaction (β = -4.5; 95% CI = -5.73, -3.20). Patients with RD in Saudi Arabia, particularly those with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, have significantly greater impairment in physical functioning and social interaction and report higher levels of fatigue and pain. Addressing and ameliorating these negative outcomes is necessary to improve quality of life.

Multicenter Study
Performance evaluation of a novel 14C-urea breath test (solid scintillation) for the diagnosis of helicobacter pylori infection.
14C-urea breath tests (UBTs) can be used to diagnose helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of a solid scintillation 14C-UBT in diagnosing H pylori infection. This open-label, prospective multicenter study enrolled patients who underwent H pylori screening from January 7, 2020, to October 28, 2020, in 3 centers in China. ⋯ One participant experienced 1 adverse event (AE) (exacerbation of chronic cholecystitis), and the AE eventually improved by itself. The investigators determined that the AE was unrelated to the study device. The noninvasive solid scintillation 14C-UBT has a high diagnostic value for H pylori infection, comparable to the diagnostic value of the gold standard.

Cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass has been shown to cause reversible postischemic cardiac dysfunction and is associated with reperfusion injury and myocardial cell death. Therefore, it is very important to have a series of measures in place to reduce oxygen consumption and provide myocardial protection. We performed a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of dexmedetomidine administration on myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. ⋯ This meta-analysis will evaluate the efficacy and safety of dexmedetomidine in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

The primary aim of the current study is to analyze the clinical, laboratory, and demographic data comparing the patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) admitted to our intensive care unit before and after the UK variant was first diagnosed in December 2020. The secondary objective was to describe a treatment approach for COVID-19. Between Mar 12, 2020, and Jun 22, 2021, 159 patients with COVID-19 were allocated into 2 groups: the variant negative group (77 patients before December 2020) and the variant positive group (82 patients after December 2020). ⋯ Although mortality and intubation rates did not differ between the groups, severe challenging early and late complications were observed mainly in the variant (+) group, necessitating invasive treatment options. We hope that our data from the pandemic will shed light on this field. Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that there is much to be done to deal with future pandemics.
