Tai chi and self-rated quality of sleep and daytime sleepiness in older adults: a randomized controlled trial.
To determine the effectiveness of tai chi on self-rated sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in older adults reporting moderate sleep complaints. ⋯ Older adults with moderate sleep complaints can improve self-rated sleep quality through a 6-month, low- to moderate-intensity tai chi program. Tai chi appears to be effective as a nonpharmacological approach to sleep enhancement for sleep-disturbed elderly individuals.

Resistance and agility training reduce fall risk in women aged 75 to 85 with low bone mass: a 6-month randomized, controlled trial.
To compare the effectiveness of group resistance and agility-training programs in reducing fall risk in community-dwelling older women with low bone mass. ⋯ These findings support the implementation of community-based resistance and agility-training programs to reduce fall risk in older women with low bone mass. Such programs may have particular public health benefits because it has been shown that this group is at increased risk of falling and sustaining fall-related fractures.

Transitional care of older adults hospitalized with heart failure: a randomized, controlled trial.
To examine the effectiveness of a transitional care intervention delivered by advanced practice nurses (APNs) to elders hospitalized with heart failure. ⋯ A comprehensive transitional care intervention for elders hospitalized with heart failure increased the length of time between hospital discharge and readmission or death, reduced total number of rehospitalizations, and decreased healthcare costs, thus demonstrating great promise for improving clinical and economic outcomes.

Fall prevention in residential care: a cluster, randomized, controlled trial.
To establish the effectiveness of a fall-prevention program in reducing falls and injurious falls in older residential care residents. ⋯ This fall-prevention intervention did not reduce falls or injury from falls. Low-intensity intervention may be worse than usual care.

Tramadol/acetaminophen combination tablets for the treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis flare in an elderly patient population.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of adding tramadol 37.5 mg/acetaminophen (APAP) 325 mg combination tablets (tramadol/APAP) to existing therapy for painful osteoarthritis (OA) flare in a subset of elderly patients. ⋯ Tramadol/APAP add-on therapy effectively managed painful OA flare in this elderly subset and was generally well tolerated.
