Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
Pharmacotherapy of pain in depressed older adults.
To examine pharmacotherapy for pain in a sample of 1,801 depressed older primary care patients. ⋯ Most depressed older adults in the sample reported recent functional impairment from pain and a history of chronic pain, but almost half of those with functional impairment from pain did not report using analgesic medications. Participating organizations varied substantially in their use of analgesics, suggesting that there is room to improve the quality of pain management in depressed older adults.

Fall prevention in residential care: a cluster, randomized, controlled trial.
To establish the effectiveness of a fall-prevention program in reducing falls and injurious falls in older residential care residents. ⋯ This fall-prevention intervention did not reduce falls or injury from falls. Low-intensity intervention may be worse than usual care.

Emergency department management of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the elderly: the Multicenter Airway Research Collaboration.
To determine adherence of emergency department (ED) management of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to current treatment guidelines. ⋯ Important differences exist between guideline recommendations and actual ED management of COPD exacerbations in older adults. Outcomes after ED treatment are poor and may be related to these shortcomings in quality of care. Better adherence to guideline recommendations when caring for elderly patients with COPD exacerbations may lead to improved clinical outcomes and better resource usage.

Efficacy of donepezil on maintenance of activities of daily living in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease and the effect on caregiver burden.
This study investigated the efficacy of donepezil treatment on activities of daily living (ADLs) and social functioning in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the possible benefits of this treatment on caregiving time and stress levels. ⋯ Donepezil demonstrated a significantly slower decline than placebo in instrumental and basic ADLs in these patients with moderate to severe AD. The ADL benefits in AD patients treated with donepezil were associated with less caregiving time and lower levels of caregiver stress.

Hospital readmissions after hospital discharge for hip fracture: surgical and nonsurgical causes and effect on outcomes.
To examine the causes of hospital readmission after hip fracture and the relationships between hospital readmission and 6-month physical function and mortality. ⋯ Hospital readmissions after hip fracture are largely due to nonsurgical illness and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
