Multicenter StudyRelationship between blood alcohol concentration on admission and outcome in dimethoate organophosphorus self-poisoning.
* Acute alcohol intoxication often complicates acute organophosphorus pesticide poisoning. * No data are available on how alcohol intoxication affects outcome in acute organophosphorus pesticide poisoning. * In particular, the relationships between plasma alcohol concentration and plasma organophosphorus concentration or outcome are unclear. ⋯ Alcohol co-ingestion is associated with higher plasma concentrations of dimethoate and increased risk of death. Larger studies are required to assess this finding's generalizability, since efforts to reduce deaths from self-poisoning may benefit from concurrent efforts to reduce alcohol consumption.

Multicenter StudySelf-medication among children and adolescents in Germany: results of the National Health Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS).
Despite the widespread use of self-medication among the child population and the potential harm it can do, up-to-date epidemiological data on self-medication are sparse worldwide. The aim was to investigate the prevalence and correlates of self-medication use among non-institutionalized children in Germany, focusing on the paediatric self-medications that are most frequently used. ⋯ Self-medication use is highly prevalent in Germany, particularly among children and adolescents from families with a higher socioeconomic status. Self-medication in younger children using such drugs as CCMs and aspirin suggested inappropriate drug use and potential risks. This should be closely monitored and warrants an education programme for parents in Germany.

Multicenter StudyAn optimized ibuprofen dosing scheme for preterm neonates with patent ductus arteriosus, based on a population pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic study.
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent that induces closure of the patent ductus arteriosus in neonates. Few studies of ibuprofen pharmacokinetics have been performed and were limited to small groups of preterm infants, showing a large intersubject variability and an increase in clearance with either postnatal or gestational age. ⋯ To achieve these optimal AUCs, irrespective of gestational age, three administrations at 24 h intervals are recommended of 10, 5, 5 mg kg(-1) for neonates younger than 70 h, 14, 7, 7 mg kg(-1) for neonates between 70 and 108 h and 18, 9, 9 mg kg(-1) for neonates between 108 and 180 h.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyA comparison of serum antivenom concentrations after intravenous and intramuscular administration of redback (widow) spider antivenom.
There are no studies measuring antivenom concentrations following intramuscular administration. This study aimed to compare antivenom concentrations following intravenous and intramuscular administration of redback spider antivenom (RBSAV). ⋯ RBS AV given by the intramuscular route is unlikely to be effective in the treatment of redback (widow) spider bite.

Multicenter StudyUsage of paracetamol-containing combination analgesics remains high in primary care.
Paracetamol-containing combination analgesics are widely prescribed but the use of paracetamol/dextropropoxyphene (co-proxamol) is particularly controversial. We aim to examine the prescribing patterns of the paracetamol-containing analgesics in Ireland. ⋯ Co-proxamol was the most commonly prescribed paracetamol-containing analgesic preparation in Ireland. The results may indicate inappropriate use in primary care.
