Prognostic value of estrogen receptor in WHO Grade III meningioma: a long-term follow-up study from a single institution.
OBJECTIVE Malignant meningioma is rare and classified as Grade III in the WHO classification of CNS tumors. However, the presence of estrogen receptor (ER) in WHO Grade III meningiomas and its correlation with patients' outcomes are still unclear. In this single-center cohort study, the authors analyzed clinical features, treatment, and prognosis of these malignant tumors in patients with long-term follow-up. ⋯ CONCLUSIONS This retrospective study showed that patients with meningioma with ER-positive expression had a much worse prognosis than those with ER weak-positive or ER-negative status. The results demonstrated that ER is an independent prognostic factor for both PFS and OS of patients with WHO Grade III meningioma. The authors also found that more radical resection of the tumor, as well as postoperative radiotherapy, may prolong patients' survival time.

Timing of cranioplasty: a 10.75-year single-center analysis of 754 patients.
OBJECTIVE Despite their technical simplicity, cranioplasty procedures carry high reported morbidity rates. The authors here present the largest study to date on complications after cranioplasty, focusing specifically on the relationship between complications and timing of the operation. METHODS The authors retrospectively reviewed all cranioplasty cases performed at Harborview Medical Center over the past 10.75 years. ⋯ Bone flap resorption was the least likely complication for patients whose cranioplasty had been performed between 15 and 30 days after initial craniectomy. Resorption was also correlated with patient age, with a hazard ratio of 0.67 per increase of 10 years of age (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Cranioplasty performed between 15 and 30 days after initial craniectomy may minimize infection, seizure, and bone flap resorption, whereas waiting > 90 days may minimize hydrocephalus but may increase the risk of seizure.

Intracranial intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH), also referred to as Masson's tumor, is a condition that rarely occurs in the nervous system. IPEH most frequently occurs extracranially in the skin of the face, skull, neck, and trunk and can easily be mistaken clinically, radiologically, and histologically for angiosarcoma, organizing hematoma, or other vascular malformations. ⋯ To date, it has never been reported to occur in the pineal region. The authors report the case of a patient with an IPEH in the pineal region who underwent complex resection and experienced reversal of neurological symptoms.

Evaluation of a novel noninvasive ICP monitoring device in patients undergoing invasive ICP monitoring: preliminary results.
OBJECTIVE There is no established method of noninvasive intracranial pressure (NI-ICP) monitoring that can serve as an alternative to the gold standards of invasive monitoring with external ventricular drainage or intraparenchymal monitoring. In this study a new method of NI-ICP monitoring performed using algorithms to determine ICP based on acoustic properties of the brain was applied in patients undergoing invasive ICP (I-ICP) monitoring, and the results were analyzed. METHODS In patients with traumatic brain injury and subarachnoid hemorrhage who were undergoing treatment in a neurocritical intensive care unit, the authors recorded ICP using the gold standard method of invasive external ventricular drainage or intraparenchymal monitoring. ⋯ CONCLUSIONS This study provides the first clinical data on the accuracy of the HS-1000 NI-ICP monitor, which uses advanced signal analysis algorithms to evaluate properties of acoustic signals traveling through the brain in patients undergoing I-ICP monitoring. The findings of this study highlight the capability of this NI-ICP device to accurately measure ICP noninvasively. Further studies should focus on clinical validation for elevated ICP values.
