Impact of Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation awards on subsequent grant funding and career outcomes of neurosurgeon-scientists.
The Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) provides diverse funding opportunities for in-training and early-career neurosurgeon-scientists. The authors analyzed the impact of NREF funding on the subsequent career success of neurosurgeons in obtaining research funding and academic achievements. ⋯ In-training and early-career neurosurgeons who were awarded NREF funding had significant success in acquiring subsequent grant support, research productivity, and achievements of academic rank. NREF grants provide a tremendous return on investment across various career stages and subspecialities. They also appeared to have a broader impact on trajectory of research and innovation within the field of neurosurgery.

Cost-effectiveness of invasive monitoring strategies in epilepsy surgery.
Drug-resistant epilepsy occurs in up to 40% of patients with epilepsy who may be considered for epilepsy surgery. For drug-resistant focal epilepsy, up to 50% of patients require invasive monitoring prior to surgery. Of the most common invasive monitoring strategies (subdural electrodes [SDEs] and stereo-electroencephalography [sEEG]), the most cost-effective strategy is unknown despite substantial differences in morbidity profiles. ⋯ In this analysis, based on available observational data and estimates of complication costs, invasive monitoring with either SDEs or sEEG was nearly equivalent in terms of cost-effectiveness.

Leptomeningeal metastases in glioma revisited: incidence and molecular predictors based on postcontrast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging.
Leptomeningeal metastases (LMs) in glioma have been underestimated given their low incidence and the lack of reliable imaging. Authors of this study aimed to investigate the real-world incidence of LMs using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-sensitive imaging, namely postcontrast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging, and to analyze molecular predictors for LMs in the molecular era. ⋯ CSF-sensitive imaging aids the diagnosis of LM, demonstrating a high incidence of LM in adult gliomas. Furthermore, molecular markers are associated with LM development in glioma, and patients with aggressive molecular markers warrant imaging surveillance for LM.

Long-term outcome of a tailored embolization strategy with Gamma Knife radiosurgery for high-grade brain arteriovenous malformations: a single-center experience.
The safety and efficacy of embolization with Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for high-grade brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are uncertain. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the long-term outcome of a tailored embolization strategy with GKRS and identify the independent factors associated with bAVM obliteration. ⋯ These data suggested that high-grade bAVMs treated using a tailored embolization strategy with GKRS were associated with a favorable clinical outcome and obliteration rate. Postembolization bAVM volume < 10 cm3, supratentorial location, staged embolization prior to GKRS, and low mean SM grade were associated with a high obliteration rate.

Benchtop proof of concept and comparison of iron- and magnesium-based bioresorbable flow diverters.
Bioresorbable flow diverters (BRFDs) could significantly improve the performance of next-generation flow diverter technology. In the current work, magnesium and iron alloy BRFDs were prototyped and compared in terms of porosity/pore density, radial strength, flow diversion functionality, and resorption kinetics to offer insights into selecting the best available bioresorbable metal candidate for the BRFD application. ⋯ The results of this study demonstrated the ability to manufacture BRFDs with magnesium and iron alloys. The data suggest that the iron alloy is the superior material candidate for the BRFD application due to its higher mechanical strength and lower resorption rate relative to the magnesium alloy.
