This meta-analysis investigated whether attentional bias, that is, the preferential allocation of attention to information that is related to pain, is a ubiquitous phenomenon. We also investigated whether attentional bias effects are related to the methodological quality of the study, to procedural differences in their measurement, or to individual differences in pain severity, pain-related fear, anxiety, and depression. Results indicated that individuals who experience chronic pain (n=1023) display an attentional bias towards pain-related words or pictures, but this bias was of a small effect size (d=0.134), and did not differ from that in control groups (d=0.082; n=1398). ⋯ Moderator analyses in the chronic pain group identified important procedural variables that affected the presence and magnitude of an attentional bias towards pain-related words and pictures, that is, type and exposure time of pain-related information. None of the individual difference variables affected the magnitude of the attentional bias. Implications of current findings and future directions are discussed.

Adherence to CONSORT harms-reporting recommendations in publications of recent analgesic clinical trials: an ACTTION systematic review.
Although improving, 'harms reporting' in analgesic clinical trials is generally poor. On average the 101 studied analgesic trials met only 60% of harms reporting recommendations.

Investigation of neuropathic pain in treated leprosy patients in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.
Pain can be a significant problem for treated leprosy patients. It can be nociceptive due to tissue inflammation occurring during episodes of immune mediated reactions, or neuropathic due to leprosy affecting the somatosensory system. There are sparse epidemiological data on the prevalence and impact of neuropathic pain in treated leprosy patients. ⋯ We have validated the use of DN4 in leprosy and it is easier to use than LANSS. Depression is a common co-morbidity in patients with NP. The high prevalence and morbidity of NP in treated leprosy patients warrant clinical trials to assess the efficacy of pain therapies for leprosy-associated NP.

Pain perception in athletes compared to normally active controls: a systematic review with meta-analysis.
This study systematically reviewed differences in pain perception between athletes and normally active controls. We screened MEDLINE, Sport-Discus, EMBASE, Web of Science, PsycINFO, PSYNDEX, and the citations of original studies and systematic reviews. All studies on experimentally induced pain that compared pain perception between athletes and normally active controls were eligible. ⋯ After exclusion of studies with high risk of bias, differences between groups in pain threshold were not significant any longer. Our data suggest that regular physical activity is associated with specific alterations in pain perception. Psychological and biological factors that may be responsible for these alterations are discussed.

Sleep disturbance and pain catastrophizing are important mediators of the chronic pain experience. To date, these factors have not been considered concurrently despite compelling theoretical rationale to do so. In the present study, we examined whether pain catastrophizing not only has direct effects on clinical pain and pain-related interference, but also indirect effects through its association with sleep disturbance. ⋯ Prospective studies are needed to examine lagged associations between these constructs. These findings have important theoretical and clinical implications. Critically, interventions that reduce pain catastrophizing may concurrently improve sleep and clinical pain.
