Photoselective vaporization (PVP) versus transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): a prospective bi-centre study of perioperative morbidity and early functional outcome.
To compare the early follow-up and perioperative morbidity of photoselective vaporization (PVP) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in patients (pts.) suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). ⋯ PVP provides excellent intraoperative safety, instant tissue removal, and immediate relief from obstructive voiding symptoms, similar to TURP. Early outcomes 6-months after PVP and TURP are comparable.

Darifenacin, an M3 selective receptor antagonist, is an effective and well-tolerated once-daily treatment for overactive bladder.
To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability and safety of darifenacin, a once-daily M3) selective receptor antagonist (M3 SRA), in patients with overactive bladder (OAB). ⋯ Darifenacin significantly improves the major symptoms of OAB. No significant CNS (primarily M1-receptor mediated) adverse events or cardiac (primarily M2-receptor mediated) adverse events were identified in this study, as may be predicted from the M3 selective receptor profile of darifenacin.

Buttock placement of the implantable pulse generator: a new implantation technique for sacral neuromodulation--a multicenter study.
In the standard operation procedure for sacral neuromodulation, the implantable pulse generator (IPG) is implanted in a subcutaneous pocket at the lower part of the anterior abdominal wall. This procedure requires a long operation time and three incisions. With the IPG in the abdominal wall, some patients complain of displacement or pain at the IPG site postoperatively. By modifying the technique of placement of the IPG, these disadvantages are overcome. ⋯ Buttock placement of the IPG in sacral nerve stimulation leads to shorter operation time; only two incisions are needed instead of three and a shorter subcutaneous tunnel is needed. Using this technique there are less complications and a lower re-operation rate.

Long-term effectiveness of sacral nerve stimulation for refractory urge incontinence.
To evaluate the long-term efficacy of sacral nerve stimulation for refractory urinary urge incontinence. ⋯ Sacral nerve stimulation is an effective treatment for refractory urge incontinence with sustained long-term benefit through an average of 30.8 months.

Randomized comparison of total androgen blockade alone versus combined with weekly epirubicin in advanced prostate cancer.
Hormone deprivation is the gold standard for the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. However, prostate cancer being primarily a heterogeneous tumor comprising hormone-dependent, hormone-sensitive, and hormone-insensitive cells, at least the latter remain unaffected by hormonal manipulations, thus making disease progression almost inevitable. In quest of a more comprehensive therapy we therefore studied the concept of early combined chemoendocrine therapy in a prospective randomized multicenter trial. ⋯ In conclusion, the combination of TAB and epirubicin was well tolerated by patients with advanced prostate cancer and resulted in a significant extension of progression-free survival. This effect of E-TAB on objective treatment outcome was accompanied by prolonged time without treatment-induced adverse effects and tumor progression, i.e., time with good quality of life. Therefore, further studies with E-TAB appear warranted in patients with advanced prostate cancer.
