Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of mineral trioxide aggregate and formocresol as pulp medicaments for pulpotomies in primary molars.
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of white mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) to that of formocresol (FC) as pulp dressing agents in pulpotomised primary molars. ⋯ MTA could be used as a safe medicament for pulpotomy in cariously exposed primary molars and could be a substitute for FC.

Randomized Controlled TrialPerioperative local anaesthetic in young paediatric patients undergoing extractions under outpatient 'short-case' general anaesthesia. A double-blind randomised controlled trial.
To investigate if postoperative pain/discomfort and anxiety experienced by young children who had extractions under general anaesthesia (GA) were affected by perioperative injection techniques of local anaesthetic (LA). ⋯ Postoperative pain/discomfort and anxiety during the period of recovery experienced by young children who had extractions under GA appear not to be affected by perioperative injection techniques of LA. Upon discharge, intraligamental injection appears beneficial, as it is probably well tolerated by causing less soft tissue numbness initially and thus, reduces perceived pain/discomfort.

Randomized Controlled TrialPortable digital assistants (PDAs) in dentistry: part II--pilot study of PDA use in the dental clinic.
To describe a simple technical evaluation of the access, security issues and uses of wireless networked PDAs in a dental clinic and report a pilot study investigating students' educational use of PDAs to access a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in a dental clinic. ⋯ The PDA proved to be a convenient and versatile mode of access to online education. Technical solutions enabled a substantial proportion of the functionality of WebCT (Web Course Tools) to be accessed by the students in a clinical environment. Both novice and experienced users were able to appreciate the use of the PDA and the less able considered that their ICT skills had improved. However, further research is needed to determine how students use a range of new technologies in their undergraduate programmes. The Dental Institute plans to recommend that all students will use this device in the future throughout their five-year curriculum, and the scoping of the implications of this recommendation is underway.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialAn RCT pilot study to test the effects of intravenous midazolam as a conscious sedation technique for anxious children requiring dental treatment--an alternative to general anaesthesia.
To add to the evidence base for acceptable and effective paediatric conscious sedation techniques in dental primary care. ⋯ This pilot shows that intravenous midazolam especially in combination with the addition of inhaled nitrous oxide or sevoflurane and nitrous oxide were promising safe and effective techniques, sufficient to justify progression to a definitive RCT with appropriate methods.

Review Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialRelative efficacy of oral analgesics after third molar extraction.
To compare the relative efficacy of analgesics after third molar extraction from systematic reviews of randomised, double blind studies. ⋯ NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors have the lowest (best) NNTs. They may also have fewer adverse effects after third molar surgery, though conclusive evidence is lacking. At least 80% of analgesic prescribing by UK dentists is in line with the best available evidence on efficacy and safety.
