Effectiveness of heparin solution versus normal saline in maintaining patency of intravenous locks in neonates: a double blind randomized controlled study.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of heparin versus saline as flush solution for maintaining patency in peripheral intravenous locks in neonates and to investigate whether other variables influence the longevity of intravenous locks. ⋯ As no difference in patency could be established, using saline as a flush solution is preferable to heparin in peripheral intravenous locks in neonates, given the greater likelihood of complications associated with heparin. Although these data are more than 5 years old, the relevance of the outcome is still important for the clinical practice because of the potential adverse effects of heparin in these vulnerable infants.

The effect of music on biochemical markers and self-perceived stress among first-line nurses: a randomized controlled crossover trial.
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of music on stress indices and to examine the association between music preference and stress. ⋯ The findings provided evidence for nurses to use soothing music as a research-based nursing intervention for stress reduction.

Reducing the fear of falling among community-dwelling elderly adults through cognitive-behavioural strategies and intense Tai Chi exercise: a randomized controlled trial.
To examine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural strategies with/without intense Tai Chi exercise in reducing fear of falling among community-dwelling elderly adults. Background. Fear of falling is a major health problem among community-dwelling older persons. The prevalence of this fear ranges from 29% to 77%, indicating the importance of developing effective strategies to reduce fear of falling among elderly adults. ⋯ The results of this trial suggest that the cognitive-behavioural intervention with Tai Chi exercise helped community-dwelling elderly adults to enhance their mobility, to manage their fear of falling and to increase their quality of life.

Reducing burnout in mothers with an intellectually disabled child: an education programme.
This paper is a report of a study conducted to examine the effect of participating in an education program on burnout for mothers of children with an intellectual disability. ⋯ Nurse-administered education should be provided for mothers who have an intellectually disabled child in order to reduce the degree of emotional burnout that these mothers typically experience.

Effect of performance feedback on tracheal suctioning knowledge and skills: randomized controlled trial.
This paper is a report of a study to determine whether individualized performance feedback improved nurses' and physiotherapists' knowledge and practice of tracheal suctioning. ⋯ Retention of knowledge and tracheal suctioning practice is improved when training is followed up by tailored feedback on performance. Further research would shed light on how long such improvements are sustained, and whether the improvements seen in a simulated setting can be generalized to clinical settings.
