In this paper an algorithm for a functional electrical stimulation (FES) gait re-education system for incomplete spinal cord injured persons, providing efficient stimulation triggering, is presented. During neurological impaired gait FES was provided as motor augmentation support. Simultaneously the gait kinematics were recorded using the proposed sensory system, which is equipped with a dual-axial accelerometer and a gyroscope. ⋯ Trial measurements were verified with a contactless optical measurement system, with FES only simulated on controller output. Later on a treadmill training in combination with FES triggering was carried out. The outcome of the measurements shows that the use of sensory integration may successfully solve the problem of data assessment in dynamic movement where an inclinometer does not provide sufficient information for efficient control of FES.

This paper presents a radio-telemetry system that provides the possibility of ECG signal transmission from a patient detection circuit via an RF data link. A PC then receives the signal through the National Instrument data acquisition card (NIDAQ). The PC is equipped with software allowing the received ECG signals to be saved, analysed, and sent by email to another part of the world. ⋯ The major contribution of the final proposed system is that it detects, processes and sends patients ECG data over a wireless RF link to a maximum distance of 200 m. Transmitted ECG data with different numbers of samples were received, decoded by means of another PIC microcontroller, and displayed using MATLAB program. The designed software is presented in a graphical user interface utility.

In this paper, a real-time QRS beat classification system based on a nonlinear trimmed moving average filter is presented. This nonlinear system aims to identify abnormal beats of ventricular origin. ⋯ Algorithm performance was evaluated against the ECG recordings drawn from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. Numerical results demonstrated that a beat classification rate of over 99.5% can be achieved by the algorithm.

Review Comparative Study
A review of high frequency oscillation ventilation in the neonate.
In this study the use of high frequency oscillation (HFO) to treat neonates with respiratory failure is analysed. The theories behind gas exchange during HFO are reviewed and its specific application to neonatal care discussed. ⋯ These interactions together with the specific HFO modes available on each ventilator should be taken into account when using a HFO for the first time or when switching from an alternative ventilation method. Medical staff who care for neonates suggest staff education and training into the variations of HFO will greatly improve its use in neonatal medicine.

Statistical partitioning of images into meaningful areas is the goal of all region-based segmentation algorithms. The clustering or creation of these meaningful partitions can be achieved in number of ways but in most cases it is achieved through the minimization or maximization of some function of the image intensity properties. ⋯ In this paper we perform an automatically initialized expectation-maximization algorithm to partition the data in medical MRI images. We present analysis and illustrate results against manual initialization and apply the algorithm to some common medical image processing tasks.
