The Nationwide Inpatient Sample Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) Severity Score (NIS-SSS) was developed as a measure of SAH severity for use in administrative databases. The NIS-SSS consists of International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision (ICD-9) diagnostic and procedure codes derived from the SAH inpatient course and has been validated against the Hunt-Hess score (HH). ⋯ The NIS-SSS and m-NIS-SSS have good external validity, and therefore, may be suitable to approximate traditional clinical scores of disease severity in SAH research using administrative data.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the deep brain stimulation of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT-DBS) as an adjunctive therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) in the United States in 2018. The DBS Therapy for Epilepsy Post-Approval Study is further evaluating the safety and effectiveness of ANT-DBS among different patients' groups. For this study, devices for vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) must be removed prior to enrolment. ⋯ ANT-DBS for DRE provides excellent results despite previous and ongoing VNS therapy. Removal of VNS does not appear to be necessary before ANT-DBS.

First Female Neurosurgeon in the United States: Dorothy Klenke Nash, MD.
Dr Dorothy Klenke Nash (1898-1976) became the first female neurosurgeon in the United States in 1928 and maintained her status as the country's only female neurosurgeon until 1960. She graduated with her medical degree from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1927 and then trained at the Neurologic Institute of New York under Dr Byron Stookey. During her training, she contributed to the advancement of neurosurgical practice through academic research. ⋯ She retired from neurosurgical practice in 1965, at which time she devoted herself to her grandchildren and her Catholic faith. She died on March 5, 1976 at the age of 77. With unwavering tenacity, Dr Nash paved the way for all women in neurosurgery.

During focused ultrasound ablation (FUSA), the presumed stereotactic target is tested with subthreshold sonications before permanent ablation. This testing relies on ultrasound-induced reversible clinical effects (thermal neuromodulation, TN). However, the thermal dose and spot size thresholds to induce TN are not yet defined. ⋯ The TN thermal dose and spot size thresholds are significantly higher than the current FUSA standard of care. We recommend long duration (>30 s), subthreshold sonications for intraoperative testing during FUSA. Future investigations should test whether the thermal dose threshold is tissue-specific and determine the mechanisms underlying focused ultrasound TN.

Surgery for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: A Nationwide Registry-Based Observational Study With Patient-Reported Outcomes.
Indications and optimal timing for surgical treatment of degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) remain unclear, and data from daily clinical practice are warranted. ⋯ Surgery for DCM is associated with significant and clinically meaningful improvement across a wide range of PROMs.
