During lumbar flexion, the fiber orientation of the lumbar erector spinae (LES) muscle becomes oriented more along the spine compressive axis. It is unknown how changes in LES activation effect fiber orientation. ⋯ Activation magnitude and spine posture both affect LES fiber orientation, thus modifying its ability to protect the spine against anterior shear forces.

Depression and anxiety are common in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and caregivers. ⋯ Depression and anxiety in ALS patients and their caregivers were associated closely with each other but not with physical disability or disease duration in our Chinese population.

Multifocal pyomyositis is a rare inflammatory myopathy caused by bacterial infection and abscess formation in multiple skeletal muscles. To date, electromyography (EMG) of pyomyositis has not been reported. ⋯ Muscles affected by pyomyositis demonstrate EMG features similar to those of other inflammatory myopathies. Other features such as acute entrapment neuropathy may exist concomitantly due to nerve compression from muscle abscess formation.

In this study we evaluated the validity of garment-based quadriceps stimulation (GQS) for assessment of muscle inactivation in comparison with femoral nerve stimulation (FNS). ⋯ GQS can be used with confidence for straightforward evaluation of quadriceps muscle inactivation, whereas its validity for assessment of contractile properties remains to be determined.

In this study we aimed to determine whether high-resolution ultrasound (US) can identify the iliohypogastric (IH), ilioinguinal (II), and genitofemoral (GF) nerves and their relations. ⋯ High-resolution ultrasound (US) can identify the IH, II, and GF nerves at the level of the abdominal wall and the terminal branches in the majority of volunteers.
