The association of thrombospondin type 1 domain-containing 7A (THSD7A) expression, a novel angiogenesis-related marker, with survival outcomes of tumors including renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains to be clarified. Therefore, we investigated the impact of THSD7A on outcomes of metastatic RCC (mRCC) patients treated with targeted therapy. ⋯ We revealed that THSD7A expression was associated with OS of mRCC patients treated with targeted therapy. There might be an important link between THSD7A expression and resistance to targeted therapy.

Chronic conditions are responsible for significant mortality and morbidity among the population in Ireland. It is estimated that almost one million people are affected by one of the four main categories of chronic disease (cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and diabetes). Primary healthcare is an essential cornerstone for individuals, families, and the community and, as such, should play a central role in all aspects of chronic disease management. ⋯ For a likely multitude of reasons, diagnostic coding in Irish general practice clinics in this study is low and insufficient for an accurate estimation of chronic disease prevalence. Monitoring of information provided through diagnostic coding is important for patients' care and safety, and therefore appropriate training and reimbursement for these services is essential.

International evidence indicates that about 10% of people with alcohol dependence will seek and commence treatment each year. Based upon Irish estimates of prevalence of dependence, a target of 690.0 treated cases per 100,000 population per annum is expected. ⋯ Despite high rates of alcohol consumption and dependence, the rate of treatment entry nationally is sub-optimal, although there are wide geographic variations. There is a need to better understand the reasons for low treatment entry rates in Ireland for people with alcohol dependence. Monitoring and surveillance play a key role in measuring the successful efforts to reduce the harm of alcohol.

Combined rhegmatogenous retinal and choroidal detachment (CRRCD) is a rare phenomenon. It is important that CRRCD is recognised preoperatively so that corticosteroids may be administered as this may make repair surgery easier to do. ⋯ These 3 patients had good anatomical and functional results following surgery for CRRCD. All patients had visual acuity of 6/18 or better at last review.

Long non-coding RNA plasmacytoma variant 1 (Lnc-PVT1) is implied with neuron apoptosis, inflammatory cytokines recruitment, endothelial cell proliferation, and angiogenesis; the latter are closely implicated in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) pathology. However, clinical significance of Lnc-PVT1 in AIS management remains unexplored. Thus, this study aimed to investigate this topic. ⋯ Lnc-PVT1 not only correlates with AIS risk, inflammation, and disease severity, but also reveals a dependable value for AIS prognostication, which still needs further studies for validation.
