Ireland has over half a million family carers who provide care to a family member or loved one. Internationally, it is recognised that general practitioners (GPs) have a critical role to play in the identification and support of family carers, but, to date, no guidelines exist in Ireland to support GPs in this role. ⋯ The findings suggest important gaps in terms of the role of GPs vis-à-vis their support of family carers. GPs themselves indicated that they need both greater clarity regarding their role with family carers and more training and resources in this regard. A requirement for more streamlined communication and information provision was also highlighted by both GPs and carers. Carers reported a need for more information on the role of GPs in supporting carers as well as more support in addressing, in particular, the psychological complexities of carer identity and help seeking.

In January 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic started and has severely affected all countries around the world. The clinical symptoms alone are not sufficient for a proper diagnosis. Thus, molecular tests are required. Various institutes and researchers developed real-time PCR-based methods for the detection of the virus. However, the method needs expensive equipment. In the present study, we developed a real-time NASBA assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2. ⋯ The results of the present study show that the developed real-time NASBA is a sensitive and specific method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 and is comparable with real-time PCR. NASBA is an isothermal signal amplification method, and if stand-alone fluorescent readers are available, the real-time NASBA can be used without the need for expensive thermocyclers. In addition compared to other isothermal methods like LAMP, the primer design is straightforward. Thus, real-time NASBA could be a suitable method for inexpensive SARS-CoV-2 detection.

The present study was aimed to compare the grip/pinch strengths and manual dexterity of individuals with and without the use of cannabis and its derivatives. ⋯ The individuals with cannabis use disorder showed reduced grip strength on both sides and decreased 2PP strength on the dominant side compared to healthy individuals. In addition, there is a decrease in the hand skills of individuals with cannabis use disorder. Decreased grip strength of individuals with cannabis use disorder affected their hand skills negatively.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most important birth defects caused by more than one mutated gene. Mutations in the genes could cause different types of congenital heart defects including atrial septal defect (ASD), tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), and ventricular septal defect (VSD). ⋯ Understanding the molecular pathways and genetic basis of CHD will help to open a new door for the treatment of patients with cardiac defects.

SARS-CoV-2 infection can affect other organs aside from those of respiratory system, particularly the kidney, heart, blood, digestive tract, and nervous system. COVID-19 renal compromise consists of different syndromes since proteinuria, hematuria, and acute kidney injury (AKI), until chronic kidney disease. Since COVID-19-induced renal tubular damage has been described as a potential antecedent condition to AKI installation, it was decided to evaluate how COVID-19 affects tubular function. ⋯ Tubular dysfunction was documented in COVID-19 patients.
