To assess the proportion of papers presented at the XXI Panamerican Congress of Trauma, VIII Congress of the Brazilian Society of Integrated Assistance to the Traumatized (SBAIT) and X Brazilian Congress of Trauma Leagues (CoLT) that were published in full. ⋯ Despite a large number of papers presented at trauma conferences in Brazil, the publications in this area are rare. The academy and the societies of surgery need to encourage the submission of scientific papers even before the presentation in Congresses in order for them to be evaluated for publication in indexed journals.

This study aims to review a series of deaths by trauma in a large metropolis. The intention is to identify preventable causes of death. ⋯ This study shows that traumatic death in the city of São Paulo is associated with serious and complex injuries. Prevention of these types of death would be related to the control of violence.

Traumatic lung herniation is an unusual clinical problem. We present a case of a large left post-traumatic lung hernia on the left, anterior, second intercostal space following blunt chest trauma. An important factor in the etiology of these lesions is the relative lack of muscular support of the anterior part of the chest. This report describes the diagnosis and management of a post-traumatic lung hernia.

[Comparative study of efficacy and safety between propofol and midazolam for sedation during colonoscopy].
To compare safety and efficacy of propofol with midazolam for deep sedation in the colonoscopy. ⋯ The cardiovascular and respiratory parameters variation, even when different between groups, didn't produced clinical repercussions. The pain and satisfaction parameters showed no significant difference between groups. It was demonstrated that the midazolam group referred more discomfort than the propofol group.

[Transdiaphragmatic intercostal hernia after spontaneous rib fractures secondary to coughing fit].
One case of transdiafragmatic intercostal hernia after intense coughing fit followed by rib fractures in patient with history of pneumonia is presented. He had a severe coughing fit, developed a right toracoabdominal hematoma and then a tumor that was gradually enlarging. Image exams confirmed the diagnosis. ⋯ It is a rare type of hernia. Only four cases were found in literature. The sooner the disease is diagnosed and treated the better the prognoses will be since it will prevent hernia from strangulation and incarceration.
