Review Case Reports
Bilateral dentigerous cysts--report of an unusual case and review of the literature.
Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental cysts of the jaws, most frequently associated with impacted mandibular third molar teeth. Bilateral dentigerous cysts are rare and occur typically in association with a developmental syndrome. The reported occurrence of bilateral dentigerous cysts in the absence of a syndrome is rare and, to date, only 11 cases have been described. Here, we report a case of bilateral nonsyndromic, dentigerous cysts and review the literature for this unusual finding.

A new technique involving the use of a local block to anesthetize the inferior alveolar nerve (V3), a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal or fifth cranial nerve, is described. Clinicians fail to administer a successful mandibular block in as many as 15 per cent of all cases. ⋯ A short description of other techniques are presented, some of which should be reserved for isolated cases and not used on a routine basis. By avoiding or eliminating the reasons for mandibular block failure, and using the new block described in this paper, clinicians should be able to reduce the failure rate to much lower levels.

The dental literature for the past 30 years, with emphasis on recent publications, was reviewed for articles on trends in dental education. A keyword search of the MEDLINE database identified 6,055 papers, from which those most likely to predict future trends are considered in this article. ⋯ Trends in curriculum analysis, curriculum change and reform, curriculum length, dental school financing, dental student costs, dental school and university relationships, dental school patient care, dental research, accreditation, oral health and trends from outside North America are documented. In addition, a series of predictions are made, and a brief bibliography of the 51 most relevant references is included.

Review Case Reports
Tori mandibularis: a case report and review of the literature.
Many dentists have patients in their practice with mandibular exostoses, termed torus mandibularis. The majority of these asymptomatic, benign bony outgrowths remain undisturbed over the patient's lifetime. ⋯ The differential diagnosis for the tori are discussed as well as the indications and techniques for their removal. Various hypotheses concerning the etiology and epidemiology of torus mandibularis are also reviewed.

Benzydamine HCL (Tantum) is a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and local anesthetic activity. This paper reviews the pharmacology of benzydamine and surveys the existing literature relating to its applications in medicine and dentistry. Guidelines for its use in dentistry are offered.
