Tracheal diverticulum: a case report and literature review.
Tracheal diverticulum (TD) is a rare, nonspecific symptom that is commonly associated with other malformations in clinical presentation and appearance on imaging. The case presented and the literature review performed highlight the importance of combining 3 D reconstruction technology and computerized Tomography (CT) results to better characterize TD on the list of differential diagnoses of patients. ⋯ Diagnostic techniques such as HRCT and 3D reconstruction technology may help to diagnose the tracheal diverticulum timely and accurately. Resection of the diverticulum is the proper surgery, but only for symptomatic congenital diverticulum; therefore preoperative definite classification is important (acquired or congenital diverticulum).

Necrotizing sialometaplasia of the palatal mucosa in patient with history of anorexia: review and case report.
Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a self-limiting disorder affecting minor salivary glands resembling a malignant process both clinically and histopathologically. The etiology of this rare inflammatory` disorder is related to an ischemic event. ⋯ This paper identifies the whole body incitement among additional risk factors by presenting a case of necrotizing sialometaplasia in an 18 year old patient with the history of anorexia nervosa. Furthermore it describes the effects of extreme cooling of palatal mucosa with ice chips resulting in constriction of blood vessels as the direct cause, reinforcing ischemic etiology of necrotizing sialometaplasia.

Tracheal invasion and perforation from advanced primary thyroid lymphoma: a case report and literature review.
We report a case of an elderly female with primary diffuse large B-cell thyroid lymphoma causing an extensive tracheal defect that was managed expectantly with good results. ⋯ Due to the rarity of invasive primary thyroid lymphoma there is currently no standard surgical management of the airway. We propose that expectant management with temporary airway protection is an alternative to invasive procedures such as tracheotomy or tracheal stent placement, even in the scenario of serious airway defects.

The use of radiation therapy has largely widespread and becomes in many centers the preference modality of treatment for symptomatic patients who are old, medically unfit for surgical therapy, those who refuse surgery and in some recurrent or residual growing tumors. The risk of radiotherapy failure in the treatment of vestibular schwannoma might be underestimated in the literature. The purpose of this study is to show the Gruppo Otologico experience with salvage surgery to better understand the surgical outcomes and difficulties in treating vestibular schwannoma after failed radiotherapy. ⋯ Complete surgical resection of VS is more difficult after radiotherapy with relatively poor facial nerve outcomes and nearly impossible hearing preservation. Patients who receive radiation therapy for the treatment of vestibular schwannoma should be made aware of its potential complications and risk of failure, especially in young patients and NF2 cases.

Selective conservative management of penetrating neck trauma is a commonly adopted procedure to manage patients of such trauma. However, at places where trauma services are inadequate on different counts and a low-intensity military conflict is on, relevance of this approach without compromising the safety and well-being of the patient remains to be evaluated. ⋯ Selective conservative management is a cost-effective approach for penetrating neck trauma even in areas where there is relative paucity of advanced trauma services. These results further reinforce the validity of careful physical examination as a reliable tool to guide further management without necessarily resorting to expensive and at times difficult to do diagnostic tests.
