Comparative Study
Assessment of extracranial-intracranial bypass in Moyamoya disease using 3T time-of-flight MR angiography: comparison with CT angiography.
To evaluate the value of time-of-flight MR angiography (TOF MRA) for the assessment of extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass in Moyamoya disease in comparison with computed tomography angiography (CTA). ⋯ 3T TOF MRA, a non-contrast technique not exposing the patients to radiation, proved to be at least equal to CTA for the assessment of EC-IC bypass, and even superior to CTA with respect to the intracranial segment. In addition, readers should be aware of a potential overestimation showing focal pseudo lesions of the bypass at the trepanation segment in TOF MRA.

Apolipoprotein B is a key structural component of all the atherogenic lipoproteins (LDL, VLDL and IDL). Genetic variations of the ApoB gene may affect plasma ApoB and lipid levels, thus influencing atherogenesis. The present study was designed to investigate the association of polymorphisms XbaI (rs693) and EcoRI (rs1042031) of the ApoB gene with plasma ApoB level, lipid levels and the different ultrasound phenotypes of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. ⋯ Both XbaI and EcoRI polymorphisms were associated with presence of plaques on carotid arteries but not with CIMT or presence of unstable plaques. Plasma ApoB level was not independently associated with ultrasonographic phenotypes of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis is rare, and data about the clinical presentation of patients are scarce. Therefore, we reviewed all cases of IVC thrombosis consecutively registered in the MAISTHRO (MAin-ISar-THROmbosis) database and described patients characteristics in terms of their clinical presentations in the acute setting of IVC thrombosis. ⋯ IVC thrombosis should be considered a differential diagnosis for inexplicable lower back or abdominal pain especially in young patients. Malignant disease and congenital IVC anomalies seem to be predisposing factors for thrombosis involving the inferior vena cava.

Intraplaque neovascularization and vasa vasorum (VV) proliferation contribute in the progression and rupture of atherosclerotic lesions. Contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) has been reported to attain data regarding intraplaque neovessels and VV. However, whether the detection of microbubbles by CEUS within atherosclerotic plaques truly represents microvessels is a point of concern. We aimed to evaluate stable and unstable carotid artery plaque (CAP) VV pattern by CEUS and its correlation with histology and immunochemistry. ⋯ The identification of brightness enhacement during CEUS in carotid atherosclerotic plaques may not always reflect the presence of VV.
