Randomized Controlled TrialThe effect of preoperative dexamethasone on early oral intake, vomiting and pain after tonsillectomy.
Postoperative morbidity in patients undergoing tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy includes inadequate oral intake, pain, nausea, vomiting and bleeding. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of preoperative 0.5 mg/kg i.v. dexamethasone on postoperative early oral intake, pain, vomiting in patients undergoing adenotonsillectomy while performing standard anesthesia technique and sharp dissection tonsillectomy. ⋯ Preoperative dexamethasone use significantly reduces early posttonsillectomy pain, improves oral intake and facilitates meeting the discharge criteria while using standard anesthesia technique and sharp dissection tonsillectomy without any significant side effects.

Beneficial effects of Ebselen on corrosive esophageal burns of rats.
This study was evaluated to investigate the efficacy of Ebselen, which is an organoselenium compound and glutathione peroxidase mimic, on the prevention of stricture development after esophageal caustic injuries in the rat. ⋯ It is concluded that Ebselen has a preventive effect in the development of fibrosis and decrease the lipid peroxidation, and increase the antioxidant defense system activity in an experimental model of corrosive esophagitis in rats.

Review Case ReportsGrisel's syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.
Grisel's syndrome is non-traumatic atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS) secondary to an inflammatory process in the upper neck. It is a rare condition that occurs almost exclusively in children and has been associated with upper cervical infections and otolaryngologic procedures. A case of AAS secondary to an upper cervical infection is presented. Potential sequelae can be severe; early diagnosis and treatment of Grisel's syndrome can prevent tragic outcome.

Case ReportsCervicofacial emphysema and pneumomediastinum following pediatric adenotonsillectomy: a rare complication.
Cervicofacial emphysema and pneumomediastinum are rarely observed sequelae of surgical intervention in the upper aerodigestive tract. It is a potentially life-threatening condition but the majority of cases are self-limiting and benign. ⋯ A case occurring after adenotonsillar surgery in a 7-year-old child is presented. This report highlights this unusual complication and its potential to delay the postoperative recovery following adenotonsillectomy.

Clinical TrialComparison of propofol with propofol-ketamine combination in pediatric patients undergoing auditory brainstem response testing.
The aim of our study was to compare propofol with propofol-ketamine combination for sedation and also to compare related complications in children undergoing auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing. ⋯ In pediatric cases where ABR testing was applied, addition of low dose ketamine to propofol avoided the risk of respiratory depression due to propofol and lowered the need for additional dose of propofol. Therefore, the co-administration of propofol and ketamine appears to be a safe and useful technique for ABR testing.
