Graft coronary artery disease is strongly related to the aetiology of heart failure and cellular rejections.
To identify risk factors for the development of coronary artery disease after heart transplantation. ⋯ Ischaemic heart disease as the aetiology of heart failure and the number of cellular rejections were powerful independent predictors of development of graft coronary artery disease following heart transplantation. The low incidence of graft coronary artery disease among patients with dilated cardiomyopathy implies that coronary angiography after heart transplantation can be made on a more selective basis.

Comparative StudyComparison of primary coronary artery bypass surgery in a British Indo-Asian and white Caucasian population.
To compare the clinical characteristics, at the time of admission and after coronary revascularization by bypass surgery, among British patients of Indo-Asian and white Caucasian descent. ⋯ A higher proportion of Indo-Asians underwent non-elective coronary revascularization, with a significantly lower use of the arterial conduit and a relatively higher in-hospital mortality. Following coronary revascularization the medical management, length of stay and hospital morbidity in Indo-Asian patients was no different from that of their white Caucasian counterparts. This is despite a perceived poorer outcome in Indo-Asians compared to white Caucasians.

Significant improvement of quality of life following atrioventricular synchronous pacing in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Data from 1 year of follow-up. PIC study group. Pacing In Cardiomyopathy.
Atrioventricular synchronous pacing exerts beneficial effects, including reduction of left ventricular outflow tract gradients, in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. The Pacing in Cardiomyopathy study was initiated to explore the effects of pacing in a double-blind randomized crossover fashion. The aims were to ascertain the beneficial effects of pacing in a controlled study and to rule out a placebo effect by pacing. This paper deals with the outcome of pacing on quality of life during 1 year of follow-up. ⋯ Atrioventricular synchronous pacing has a profound beneficial effect on most domains of quality of life in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy refractory to drug treatment.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialA randomized comparison of intra-aortic balloon pumping after primary coronary angioplasty in high risk patients with acute myocardial infarction.
Intra-aortic balloon pumping reduces afterload and may be effective in improving reperfusion in high risk infarct patients treated with primary angioplasty. ⋯ Systematic use of intra-aortic balloon pumping after primary angioplasty does not lead to myocardial salvage or to a better clinical outcome in high-risk infarct patients. Use of intra-aortic balloon pumping after primary PTCA for acute myocardial infarction should be reserved for patients with severe haemodynamic compromise.
