This study obtained insight in motivation regarding food choices of Dutch employees, especially when visiting the worksite cafeteria. We also aimed to know why employees visit the worksite cafeteria. These insights are useful for intervention development to encourage healthier purchases in worksite cafeterias. ⋯ This focus group study shows that drivers for food selection can differ from motives for visiting the worksite cafeteria and when choosing food there. Health is important for food choice in general, but less important in the worksite cafeteria. The results of this study could be used in the development of strategies that aim to change people's food choice behavior.

The aim of this study was to compare food fussiness, weight, serious choking, and early feeding characteristics in babies following Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) and babies following traditional spoon-feeding (TSF) at 6-7 months of age. The First Foods New Zealand Internet Survey recruited 876 New Zealand caregivers of children aged 6-36 months through social media. Information was collected on food fussiness, infant weight, choking, infant feeding practices, and demographics. ⋯ Benefits associated with BLW included less food fussiness. Although BLW infants were more likely to eat red meat, they were less likely to eat iron-fortified infant cereal. These results suggest the need for studies with biochemical measurement of nutritional status, standardized measurement of weight, and rigorous assessment of diet in infants following BLW.

The effect of sugar-sweetened beverage front-of-pack labels on drink selection, health knowledge and awareness: An online randomised controlled trial.
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) provide little nutritional value and are associated with an increased risk of diet-related diseases. Despite this, SSB consumption is high globally. One emerging strategy aimed at reducing SSB consumption involves the use of front-of-pack (FOP) labels that clearly identify the risks associated with SSB consumption. The aim of this research study was to determine whether FOP labels with a graphic warning, text warning, sugar information (with the number of teaspoons of added sugar) or Health Star Rating (HSR) reduces intended choice of a SSB in an online choice experiment with young Australian adults. ⋯ FOP labels, particularly those with graphic warnings, have the potential to reduce intended SSB purchases. Labels that also identify healthier alternatives may influence consumers to substitute SSBs with healthier drinks.

The links between parental restriction of food intake, child's eating behaviour and child's adiposity are still unclear. Our aim was to validate a model suggesting an underlying mechanism for the impact of parental restriction on child's adiposity through a broad dimension of child's eating temperament entitled the appetite reactivity (including both appetite arousal and appetite persistence). ⋯ A well-fitting structural model (AGFI = 0.91; RMSEA = 0.07; SRMR = 0.08) was identified, showing that: (i) perceived maternal restriction of child's food intake negatively impacts child's appetite arousal and food portion size but positively influences child's appetite persistence; (ii) the two components of appetite reactivity have a positive effect on child's adiposity which is partly mediated by child's actual food portion size. Results suggest an explanation for the controversy surrounding the links between parental food restriction and child's adiposity: through its negative impact on child's appetite arousal and food portion size, parental control may protect against overweight, but because of its positive effect on appetite persistence, it can also be detrimental.

Visually suboptimal bananas: How ripeness affects consumer expectation and perception.
One reason for the significant amount of food that is wasted in developed countries is that consumers often expect visually suboptimal food as being less palatable. Using bananas as example, the objective of this study was to determine how appearance affects consumer overall liking, the rating of sensory attributes, purchase intention, and the intended use of bananas. The ripeness degree (RD) of the samples was adjusted to RD 5 (control) and RD 7 (more ripened, visually suboptimal). ⋯ The importance that consumers attribute to the shelf-life of food had a pronounced impact on purchase intention of bananas with different ripeness degree. In the case of suboptimal bananas, the results demonstrate a positive relationship between the sensory perception and overall liking and purchase intention. Convincing consumers that visually suboptimal food is still tasty is of high relevance for recommending different ways of communication.
