Transient Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency: First Report of an Unrecognized Complication of Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC.
As cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are being increasingly adopted as the standard treatment for peritoneal surface malignancies, familiarity with this procedure's adverse events is also growing. Herein, we describe an unreported adverse event of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) following CRS and HIPEC. ⋯ EPI is a potential adverse event following CRS and HIPEC and might be largely responsible for refractory diarrhea. In our patients with refractory diarrhea and low FE1, PERT provided immediate symptomatic relief. The biological basis of this phenomenon remains unclear and warrants further investigation.

A Strategy for Using Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring During Esophagectomy to Prevent Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy.
There have been only sporadic reports on intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) during esophageal cancer surgery. We aimed to establish a strategy for the use of IONM during esophagectomy. ⋯ In esophageal cancer surgery, identification of the RLN using IONM can be carried out safely, simply, and promptly. Using IONM systematically, the prediction of RLN palsy and detection of nerve injury point seems feasible.

Associations Between Histogram Analysis DCE MRI Parameters and Complex 18F-FDG-PET Values in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
To analyze associations between parameters of positron-emission tomography (PET) and histogram analysis values of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) imaging in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). ⋯ Tumor metabolism and perfusion show complex associations in HNSCC. These associations depend on tumor grading.

ReviewAnalytical Methods for Quantification of Vitamin D and Implications for Research and Clinical Practice.
A plethora of contradictory research surrounds vitamin D and its influence on health and disease. This may, in part, result from analytical difficulties with regard to measuring vitamin D metabolites in serum. Indeed, variation exists between analytical techniques and assays used for the determination of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. ⋯ Likewise, healthcare professionals are increasingly incorporating vitamin D testing and supplementation regimens into their practice, and measurement errors may be also confounding the clinical decisions. Importantly, the Vitamin D Standardisation Programme is an initiative that aims to standardise the measurement of vitamin D metabolites. Such a programme is anticipated to eliminate the inaccuracies surrounding vitamin D quantification.

Control of Nausea and Vomiting in Patients Receiving Anthracycline/Cyclophosphamide Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer.
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is one of most distressing adverse events during cancer chemotherapy. In breast cancer patients receiving anthracycline and cyclophosphamide (AC) chemotherapy, CINV is poorly controlled. ⋯ CINV was poorly controlled in breast cancer patients receiving AC chemotherapy, in which age younger than 55-year-old was a significant risk for both nausea and vomiting. Olanzapine was effective for improvement of the control of CINV associated with AC chemotherapy. Therefore, care should be taken to prevent CINV in young patients receiving AC chemotherapy by adding olanzapine to the standard three-drug antiemetic medication.
