Overestimation of subfoveal choroidal thickness by measurement based on horizontally compressed optical coherence tomography images.
To measure the difference in subfoveal choroidal thickness between 1:1 pixel (horizontally compressed) images and 1:1 micron images in age-related macular degeneration. ⋯ Significant overestimation of the subfoveal choroidal thickness was noted when it was measured on a 1:1 pixel image. This finding suggests that the measurement of choroidal thickness should be performed based on a 1:1 micron image, especially if the measurement line is not vertical.

Comparative StudyImpact of simulator training on resident cataract surgery.
Virtual reality surgery simulation training improves resident performance as measured by the simulator itself and wet-lab performance. This study aims to determine whether virtual surgery simulator training improves actual resident cataract surgery performance. ⋯ Virtual reality surgical simulator training mildly shortens the learning curve for the first 50 phacoemulsification cases. The less adept residents appear to benefit most.

Pediatric eye injuries presenting to United States emergency departments: 2001-2007.
The epidemiology of pediatric eye injuries is not well-documented. This study describes the characteristics of non-fatal eye injuries in pediatric patients (<18 years of age) presenting to United States (US) emergency departments (EDs). ⋯ This study suggests that the risk for pediatric eye injuries is highest for adolescents 15-17 years of age and at home. Further research is needed to determine risk and protective factors associated with injuries in this age group and location to design appropriate prevention strategies.

Clinical risk management in eye outpatient surgery: a new surgical safety checklist for cataract surgery and intravitreal anti-VEGF injection.
A database study to test a new model of surgical safety checklist for eye surgery in the outpatient operating room, especially for cataract surgery and intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. ⋯ The study showed a high level of adherence to the checklist. A surgical safety checklist could improve the management of an eye surgery operating room.
