Open globe injuries are the most serious eye injuries in war as in peace time. The purpose of this study is to analyze wartime open globe eye injuries in 72 patients treated at the Department of Ophthalmology, Clinical Hospital of Split from July 1991 to April 1993, during the intensive war in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to evaluate crucial factors responsible for the functional success of the treatment. ⋯ The most important factors in the prognosis of postoperational visual acuity for wartime open globe eye injuries were: (1) preoperative condition of the eye, (2) localization and extent of the wound, (3) presence, size and nature of foreign bodies, and (4) adequate surgical treatment in specialized institutions.

Case Reports Clinical TrialIntravitreal loading injection of ganciclovir with or without adjunctive oral valganciclovir for cytomegalovirus anterior uveitis.
A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic results of intravitreal ganciclovir injection as a loading dose with or without the following oral valganciclovir for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) anterior uveitis in immunocompetent patients. ⋯ In patients with CMV anterior uveitis, intravitreal ganciclovir injection as a loading dose with or without the following oral valganciclovir can control the inflammation and IOP well.

ReviewDiagnostic accuracy of vision screening tests for the detection of amblyopia and its risk factors: a systematic review.
This systematic review evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of preschool vision screening tests for the detection of amblyopia and its risk factors. ⋯ Diagnostic test accuracy of preschool vision screening tests can only be sufficiently investigated after establishing age-related values defining amblyopia, refractive errors and binocular disorders. To address these questions, we recommend a controlled longitudinal study design.

A dietary combination of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids is more efficient than single supplementations in the prevention of retinal damage induced by elevation of intraocular pressure in rats.
To evaluate the effect of a dietary combination of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) compared to single PUFA supplementations on the outcome of a substantial elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) in rats. ⋯ This study demonstrates that a 6-month supplementation with a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 PUFAs is more effective than single supplementations, since the EPA + DHA + GLA dietary combination prevented retinal cell structure and decreased glial cell activation induced by the elevation of IOP in rats.
