Imatinib has potential teratogenicity in animals, but the effect of exposure to imatinib during conception and pregnancy in humans is not known. ⋯ Although there is no evidence that a brief exposure to imatinib during conception and pregnancy adversely affects the developing fetus, most patients lose their response after treatment interruption. Patients receiving imatinib should be advised to practice adequate contraception.

Addition of epirubicin as a third drug to carboplatin-paclitaxel in first-line treatment of advanced ovarian cancer: a prospectively randomized gynecologic cancer intergroup trial by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Gynaekologische Onkologie Ovarian Cancer Study Group and the Groupe d'Investigateurs Nationaux pour l'Etude des Cancers Ovariens.
Despite the progress that has been achieved, long-term survival rates in patients with advanced ovarian cancer are still disappointing. One attempt to improve results could be the addition of non-cross-resistant drugs to platinum-paclitaxel combination regimens. Anthracyclines were among the candidates for incorporation as a third drug into first-line regimens. ⋯ Addition of epirubicin to TC did not improve survival or time to treatment failure in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer; therefore, it cannot be recommended for clinical use in this population.

To evaluate the incidence of and risk factors for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in survivors of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). ⋯ This analysis suggests that immutable factors, such as age and complexion, have a significant impact on BCC and SCC. However, specific treatment (radiotherapy) and transplantation complications (GVHD) may modify that risk. These additional risk factors suggest the contribution of immunologic mechanism DNA and tissue repair in the development of BCC and SCC. We confirm previous reports that exposure to ionizing radiation increases the risk of BCC but not SCC. Survivors of HCT should be monitored for the development of BCC and SCC and use preventive strategies.

A retrospective review with long-term follow-up is reported from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation studying radiation and concurrent multiagent chemotherapy in patients with locoregionally advanced squamous cell head and neck cancer. ⋯ Concurrent multiagent chemoradiotherapy can result in organ preservation and cure in the majority of appropriately selected patients with locoregionally advanced, nonmetastatic, squamous cell head and neck cancer. Distant metastatic disease was the most common cause of treatment failure. Late functional outcomes will require further investigation.
