Assessment of Advanced Life Support competence when combining different test methods--reliability and validity.
Robust assessment of Advanced Life Support (ALS) competence is paramount to the credibility of ALS-provider certification and for estimating the learning outcome and retention of ALS competence following the courses. The European Resuscitation Council (ERC) provides two sets of MCQs and four Cardiac Arrest Simulation Test (CASTest) scenarios for the assessments according to guidelines 2005. ⋯ ERC sub-tests of ALS competence possess sufficient reliability and validity. A combined ALS score with equal weighting of one MCQ and one CASTest can be used as a single measurement of ALS competence.

The voice advisory manikin (VAM): an innovative approach to pediatric lay provider basic life support skill education.
To determine the efficacy of immediate, standardized, corrective audio feedback training as supplied by the voice advisory manikin (VAM) compared to high quality standardized instructor feedback training for the initial acquisition of 1-rescuer lay provider pediatric BLS skills. ⋯ Immediate, standardized, corrective audio feedback training as supplied by the voice advisory manikin (VAM) can improve initial pediatric basic life support skill acquisition for lay providers even when compared to one-on-one, standardized instructor-led training.

Retention of CPR skills learned in a traditional AHA Heartsaver course versus 30-min video self-training: a controlled randomized study.
Bystander CPR improves outcomes after out of hospital cardiac arrest. The length of current 4-h classes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a barrier to more widespread dissemination of CPR training and older adults in particular are underrepresented in traditional classes. Training with a brief video self-instruction (VSI) program has shown that this type of training can produce short-term skill performance at least as good as that seen with traditional American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver training, although it is unclear whether there is comparable skill retention. ⋯ Retention of CPR skills was compared 2 months post-training for adults between 40 and 70 years old who had taken either a traditional Heartsaver CPR course or a 22-min video self-directed training course. Although performance declines occurred in the 2-month interval, self-trained subjects generally demonstrated CPR skill retention equivalent to that of Heartsaver-trained subjects, although for both groups skill decline on some measures reached the level of untrained controls.

The relationship between shocks and survival in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients initially found in PEA or asystole.
To describe survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest for patients who present with pulseless electrical activity or asystole according to whether they remained in a non-shockable rhythm or converted to ventricular fibrillation and were shocked appropriately. ⋯ These results suggest that patients with cardiac arrest who develop VF during the course of treatment for initially observed pulseless electrical activity or asystole do not benefit from conventional approaches to treatment such as defibrillation. Further study is warranted to define the optimal treatment of this patient cohort.

Evaluation of M-AID, a first aid application for mobile phones.
When performed effectively, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by bystanders reduces mortality due to sudden cardiac arrest. Telemedicine applications offer a means by which bystanders can get specific instructions for handling the emergency situation. M-AID, a first aid application for mobile phones, uses an intelligent algorithm of 'yes' or 'no' questions to judge the ongoing situation and give the user detailed instructions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit of this mobile phone application in a scenario of sudden cardiac arrest. ⋯ Experience in the use of mobile phones is a prerequisite for the efficient use of the tested M-AID version. This application cannot replace skills acquisition by practical training. In a subgroup with experience in mobile phone use and basic knowledge in CPR, the device improved performance of CPR.
