Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
PercuTwist: a new alternative to Griggs and Ciaglia's techniques.
Tracheostomy is one of the most common procedures in intensive care units worldwide. In this study we aimed to compare three different tracheostomy techniques with respect to duration of procedure and complications. ⋯ Percutaneous tracheostomy techniques have their own advantages and complications. PercuTwist, a new controlled rotating dilatation method, was associated with minimal complications, appears to be easy to perform and a practical alternative to percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy and guide-wire dilating forceps techniques.

Influence of controlled hypotension using esmolol and sodium nitroprusside on natriuretic peptides in patients undergoing endonasal sinus surgery.
Atrial and brain natriuretic peptide, synthesized by cardiac myocytes, are mediators secreted secondary to cardiac volume expansion and increased filling pressure. The study was designed to assess serum concentration of atrial and brain natriuretic peptide in patients undergoing endonasal sinus surgery receiving controlled hypotension. ⋯ Controlled hypotension decreases the release of natriuretic peptides in cardiovascular healthy patients. This effect may be contributed to by changes in cardiac filling pressure due to lower systemic resistance and diminished perfusion pressure.

Anaesthesia is a medical specialty that is particularly concerned with the safety of the patient who is undergoing a surgical procedure. This is a prerequisite in order to provide quality of care, which is based on good clinical practice, on a sound organization, on an agreement on best practice and on adequate communication with other healthcare workers involved. Providing a safe environment for those working in healthcare is at least as important as other factors serving that objective. A working party on Safety and Quality in Anaesthesiological Practice in the Section and Board of Anaesthesiology of the European Union of Medical Specialists (EUMS/UEMS) has prepared guidelines that were amended and approved recently.

The mission of the Section and Board of Anaesthesiology of the European Union of Medical Specialists (EUMS/UEMS) is to harmonize training and medical practice in all European countries to continuously improve the quality of care. The need for continuous medical education in the field of anaesthesiology has long been recognized. ⋯ The need to acquire medical, managerial, ethical, social and personal communication skills on top of specialty-based competencies has developed into the principle of continuous professional development, which embraces both objectives. The Section and Board of Anaesthesiology of the EUMS/UEMS has approved a proposal of its Standing Committee on Continuous Medical Education/Continuous Professional Development to adopt the following charter on the subject.

In human beings, pain and taste perception are two major sensory inputs. We investigated whether increasing bitter taste sensitivity would increase intensity or incidence of pain associated with propofol, and whether there is a relationship between bitter sensitivity and venepuncture pain. ⋯ We conclude that increased bitter taste sensitivity correlates with increased intensity or incidence of propofol injection pain and NRS of venepuncture pain.
