Genetics and postsurgical neuropathic pain: An ancillary study of a multicentre survey.
Neuropathic pain following surgery could be a useful model for the study of the genetic mechanisms of peripheral neuropathic pain. ⋯ This is the first genetic association study specifically investigating the occurrence of persistent postsurgical neuropathic pain. Its results help target future research to better understand the mechanisms of peripheral neuropathic pain.

Flow-controlled ventilation during ear, nose and throat surgery: A prospective observational study.
Flow-controlled ventilation (FCV) is a new mechanical ventilation mode that maintains constant flow during inspiration and expiration with standard tidal volumes via cuffed narrow-bore endotracheal tubes. Originating in manually operated 'expiratory ventilation assistance', FCV extends this technique by automatic control of airway flow, monitoring of intratracheal pressure and control of peak inspiratory pressure and end-expiratory pressure. FCV has not yet been described in a clinical study. ⋯ FCV achieves adequate PetCO2 levels with minute volume and Δp in the normal range. Tritube's high flow resistance may increase the likelihood of tube dislocations if the patient coughs. Although further evaluation is necessary, FCV provides a new option for short-term mechanical ventilation. The successful operation of FCV with narrow-bore tubes contributes to the armamentarium for airway management.

Epidemiology and incidence of severe respiratory critical events in ear, nose and throat surgery in children in Europe: A prospective multicentre observational study.
Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery, the most frequently performed surgical procedure in children, is a strong predictor for peri-operative respiratory complications. However, there is no clear information about peri-operative respiratory severe critical events (SCEs) associated with anaesthesia management of ENT children in Europe. ⋯ The results of this study provide additional evidence for strong associations between risk factors and respiratory SCEs in children having ENT surgery. These observations may facilitate the implementation of good clinical practice recommendations for ENT patients in Europe.

Development of a prediction model for postoperative pneumonia: A multicentre prospective observational study.
Postoperative pneumonia is associated with increased morbidity, mortality and costs. Prediction models of pneumonia that are currently available are based on retrospectively collected data and administrative coding systems. ⋯ We identified five variables independently associated with postoperative pneumonia. The model performed well and after external validation may be used for risk stratification and management of patients at risk of postoperative pneumonia.

Goal-directed therapy during transthoracic oesophageal resection does not improve outcome: Randomised controlled trial.
Goal-directed therapy (GDT) is expected to be of highest benefit in high-risk surgery. Therefore, GDT is recommended during oesophageal resection, which carries a high risk of postoperative complications. ⋯ Goal-directed therapy during oesophageal resection did not result in a reduction of the incidence of postoperative complications.
