Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Efficacy and safety of pregabalin for treating neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy: a 14 week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
To evaluate the efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics of pregabalin in treating neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy in Japanese patients. ⋯ Pregabalin was effective in reducing pain and improving sleep disturbances due to pain, and was well tolerated in Japanese patients with painful DPN.

Reduced incidence of blindness in relation to diabetes mellitus in southern Germany?
We estimated the incidence of blindness in the diabetic and non-diabetic population in 2008 and compared it with results from 1990-1998 in a neighbouring region. ⋯ We found the incidence of blindness to be approximately 2.5-fold higher in the diabetic compared with the non-diabetic population. Fifty-eight per cent of the risk to become blind in diabetic individuals and 9% of the risk to become blind in the entire population were attributable to diabetes. The decrease of the blindness incidence observed during the 1990s may have continued.

Four-year impact of a continuous quality improvement effort implemented by a network of diabetes outpatient clinics: the AMD-Annals initiative.
We evaluated the impact of a continuous quality improvement effort implemented by a network of Italian diabetes clinics operating in the national healthcare system. ⋯ A physician-led quality improvement effort, based on the systematic evaluation of routine data, is effective in improving the performance of a large number of diabetes clinics. The small percentage increase in the number of patients at target, if applied to large numbers of patients, would translate into a significant impact on public health.

Comparison of the efficacy and safety of tramadol/acetaminophen combination therapy and gabapentin in the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy.
This study compared the efficacy and safety of tramadol/acetaminophen (T/A) and gabapentin in the management of painful diabetic neuropathy. ⋯ This study suggests that the T/A combination treatment is as effective as gabapentin in the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Initiating insulin therapy in elderly patients with Type 2 diabetes: efficacy and safety of lispro mix 25 vs. basal insulin combined with oral glucose-lowering agents.
To compare starter insulins in the elderly subgroup of the DURABLE trial 24-week initiation phase. ⋯ In this elderly subgroup post-hoc analysis, LM25 demonstrated a lower endpoint HbA(1c) and a higher % of patients reaching HbA(1c) target of < 7.0%, but with more weight gain and higher rates of hypoglycaemia compared to glargine.
