Can oral sucrose reduce the pain and distress associated with screening for retinopathy of prematurity?
Infants undergoing eye exams to screen for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) demonstrate physiologic and behavioral manifestations of pain and distress. Oral sucrose has analgesic properties that might reduce these effects. ⋯ Oral [S] was not effective in reducing pain/distress from the ROP screening exam. Alternative strategies should be considered to achieve adequate pain relief.

Effect of a single dose of sodium bicarbonate given during neonatal resuscitation at birth on the acid-base status on first day of life.
To study the effect of a single dose of sodium bicarbonate given during neonatal resuscitation at birth on the acid-base status on the first day of life. ⋯ Sodium bicarbonate given during neonatal resuscitation did not change the acid-base status in the first 24 hours of life.

Prophylactic acetaminophen does not prevent epidural fever in nulliparous women: a double-blind placebo-controlled trial.
Epidural analgesia is associated with a four- to five- fold increase in noninfectious maternal fever in nulliparous women. Fever prophylaxis may safely reduce both unnecessary neonatal sepsis evaluations and the potential effect of fever on the fetus. ⋯ Acetaminophen prophylaxis prevented neither maternal hyperthermia nor fever secondary to epidural analgesia, suggesting that the mechanism underlying fever does not include centrally mediated perturbations of maternal thermoregulation.

Physical activity combined with massage improves bone mineralization in premature infants: a randomized trial.
Osteopenia of prematurity is a known source for morbidity in preterm infants. Premature infants have shown favorable outcomes in response to massage and physical activity. Whether such intervention can stimulate bone formation or decrease bone resorption is yet to be determined. ⋯ A combined massage and physical activity protocol improved bone formation (PICP) but did not affect bone resorption (Pyd). Pyd increased over time in both groups, possibly due to continuous bone resorption and Ca mobilization.

Comparison of three outpatient regimens in the management of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
This study compares pyridoxine-metoclopramide combination therapy to prochlorperazine and promethazine monotherapies in the outpatient treatment of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. ⋯ Combination therapy with pyridoxine and metoclopramide appears to be superior to either monotherapy in the treatment of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
