We show a comparison between two patient groups of the inpatient population suffering from femoral neck fractures registered in the external quality assurance between 1993 and 1997 and between 2005 and 2009. ⋯ The technique of operative treatment changed and while during the 1990s many patients with femoral neck fractures were treated by implanting a total endoprosthesis, in the 2000s treatment was dominated by the hemi prosthesis. During the two periods of study use of the osteosynthesis technique decreased. In conclusion, the study showed an obvious compression of performance in trauma surgery but despite everything there was a clear improvement of treatment quality with respect to complication rates.

Multicenter Study
[Neuromuscular deficits in chronic ankle instability : Frequency and significance - multicenter study.]
The peroneal reaction time (PRT) is used in the assessment of neuromuscular deficits in chronic functional ankle instability. Powered by the Editorial Manager and Preprint Manager from Aries Systems Corporation the present study was conducted to determine the PRT in a large collective of patients with chronic ankle instability because it is unclear if this parameter of neuromuscular deficit is prolonged. In this study 186 patients underwent a diagnostic algorithm consisting of anamnesis, clinical examination, X-ray and determination of the PRT on a tilting platform. ⋯ Of these 77 patients only 15 (8%) showed radiological evidence of a mechanical problem. As a consequence of recurring ankle sprains a post-traumatic deficit in proprioception has to be expected in most cases. In general a conservative therapy approach should be followed including specific training to improve neuromuscular and proprioceptive deficits.

[Causes, injuries, therapy and possibilities of prevention of equine-related accidents : Results of a 2-center-study.]
Horse riding is associated with a high rate of injuries. The possibilities of prevention are limited because of deficient knowledge about the causes and mechanisms of equine-related accidents. In the present study 198 equine-related accidents were analyzed and based on these data risk groups were identified and guidelines to improve safety in horse riding were formulated. ⋯ Equestrians wear helmets increasingly more when riding but the willingness to wear body protectors is disappointing. Protective headgear has been proven to reduce the risk of injuries but based on these data a positive effect of body protectors could not be shown. In this study safety vest users suffered from injuries of the upper body more often than those who did not wear a body protector. Children and adolescents often overestimate their skills; therefore, teaching and supervision of inexperienced young riders along with the use of protective equipment can prevent major injuries.

Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
[Experiences with a helical femoral nail (LFN®). A multicenter study].
Antegrade intramedullary nailing is the method of choice in most femoral shaft fractures. The trochanteric entry portal of classic femoral nails is in close proximity to the piriformis tendon, the gluteus minimus tendon, the obturator tendons, and the medial femoral circumflex artery. Nail insertion lateral to the tip of the greater trochanter may be more favorable but needs the use of a helical implant. ⋯ The results obtained in this study during 1 year do not provide evidence for an advantage of the LFN over conventional antegrade femoral nails.

Multicenter Study Controlled Clinical Trial
[Operative versus conservative treatment of non-displaced fractures of the scaphoid bone. Results of a controlled multicenter cohort study].
Within a prospective, multicenter cohort study we investigated whether operative treatment of scaphoid bone fractures leads to earlier return to previous activity levels. ⋯ Operative treatment primarily facilitates earlier return to previous activity levels, as well as better functional status, less pain and higher patient satisfaction, but conservative treatment seems to be safer and associated with a lower complication rate.
