Different studies confirmed the increased radiological implantation accuracy for computer-assisted total knee replacements. There was no study stating a significant influence of the navigation technique for total knee arthroplasties on the early clinical outcomes. In these two case reports we try to show special indications for a navigated total knee replacement to utilize the benefits of a navigation system as efficiently as possible. ⋯ The clinical outcomes at the 3-month follow-up were very satisfying. In case 1 the femoral nail did not have to be removed, thus decreasing surgery duration by 40-60 min. In both cases, the impossibility of using a femoral intramedullary alignment rod could be compensated for by the navigation system.

If the standard technical guidelines are ignored so that the antirotation screw is not correctly placed during gamma nail osteosynthesis, dislocation of the hip screw is possible. In the rare cases of migration into the pelvis, the consequences may be lethal.

[Development of a catalogue of undergraduate learning objectives for orthopaedics and traumatology].
The development towards a combined speciality of orthopaedic and trauma surgery requires not only consolidation and revision of the postgraduate education training programme but also the development of a catalogue of learning objectives as a uniform basis for undergraduate medical training in the new speciality at German medical schools and teaching hospitals. ⋯ Although this alliance of orthopaedics and trauma surgery is recent, the commission has developed not only a collection of topics but a joint catalogue of learning objectives for undergraduate training that can be used nationwide. This catalogue paves the way for modern education that looks to the future. The integrated recommendations for content prioritisation, links to other subjects and specialities, and the integration of didactic methods facilitate local implementation of the learning objectives without loss of academic freedom.

Fractures of the olecranon account for 7% of fractures in adult patients. Of all elbow fractures, 38% are isolated fractures of the olecranon. Falling on the 90 degrees flexed elbow is the most common cause of isolated olecranon fractures. ⋯ Tension band wiring and plate osteosynthesis are the most commonly used techniques. Operative therapy is the therapy of choice, since it permits early physical therapy. Some non-dislocated fractures and fractures in elderly and multimorbid patients are indications for conservative therapy.
