Researchers estimate the incidence of early onset sepsis as 0.77-1/1,000 live births. It remains as one of the leading causes of neonatal deaths. ⋯ Clinicians frequently trend C-reactive protein levels during evaluation for neonatal sepsis. Recently, researchers have begun to explore procalcitonin as a potentially useful diagnostic marker for neonatal sepsis.

ReviewLaboratory Evaluation of Infants with Possible Congenital Zika Virus Infection.
Our understanding of the effects of maternal Zika virus infection on the newborn continues to evolve. First discovered in 1947 in the Zika Forest in Uganda, the world became more aware of the virus in 2015, with reports of hundreds of cases of microcephaly in Brazilian newborns whose mothers reported symptoms related to Zika viral infection during pregnancy. This article reviews the current guidelines for laboratory evaluation of newborns with possible congenital Zika virus infection.

ReviewIntegrated Evaluation of Neonatal Hemodynamics Program Optimizing Organ Perfusion and Performance in Critically Ill Neonates, Part 1: Understanding Physiology of Neonatal Hemodynamics.
Integrated evaluation of neonatal hemodynamics is the integration of information obtained by echocardiography, clinical evaluation, and biochemical markers, in addition to the clinical information obtained from noninvasive and invasive monitoring of blood pressure and arterial and tissue oxygenation, leading to the formulation of a medical recommendation. This review will focus on the physiology of cardiovascular dynamics and oxygen delivery.

ReviewPain in the neonate: focus on nonpharmacologic interventions.
The assessment and treatment of pain in the neonate, especially preterm neonates, has been a challenge in the NICU for many years. Nurses caring for these vulnerable patients are in a key position to not only recognize when the neonate is experiencing pain but to also work collaboratively with other health care providers in determining the best method to treat and help prevent pain associated with procedures and routine caregiving activities. ⋯ Nurses, by anticipating and reducing both painful procedures and bedside interruptions, along with innovative nonpharmacologic interventions, can dramatically decrease the neonate's exposure to pain and the potential for long-term effects. An overview of nonpharmacologic interventions in the treatment of neonatal pain is provided for NICU nurses to help them effectively reduce their patient's pain and discomfort.

When women addicted to opioids seek prenatal care, the treatment of choice is methadone. Methadone mediates the addiction by reducing fluctuations in maternal serum opioid levels and protecting the fetus from repeated withdrawal episodes. ⋯ Despite the magnitude of this national problem, there is a dearth of literature to guide NICU nurses on how to best support mothers of infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in the care of their infants. The purposes of this article are to review what is known about women in methadone treatment who have a history of opioid addiction and apply that evidence to guide neonatal nurses to support mothers of infants with NAS in the NICU.
