Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Hydrocodone/acetaminophen and tramadol chlorhydrate combination tablets for the management of chronic cancer pain: a double-blind comparative trial.
The purpose of this study was to compare the analgesic efficacy and tolerability of opioids hydrocodone and tramadol in the relief of cancer pain. ⋯ There was no superior analgesic efficacy with the administration of hydrocodone/acetaminophen when compared to patients receiving tramadol in the relief of cancer pain. Tramadol produced more mild side effects than hydrocodone.

Epidural local anesthetic plus corticosteroid for the treatment of cervical brachial radicular pain: single injection versus continuous infusion.
Efficacy of epidural local anesthetics plus steroids for the treatment of cervicobrachial pain is uncertain. ⋯ Therapy with continuous epidural local anesthetic and methylprednisolone provides better control of chronic cervicobrachial pain compared with Single injection. These results are discussed with respect to the possible mechanism of action of the drugs and may relate to the physiopathologic mechanisms associated with neuronal plasticity that result in chronic pain.

Nimesulide in the treatment of postoperative pain: a double-blind, comparative study in patients undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.
To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of nimesulide in the relief of postoperative pain after orthopedic surgery compared with naproxen and placebo. ⋯ This study demonstrates that nimesulide is an effective, fast-acting and well-tolerated oral anti-inflammatory drug with a distinct analgesic activity after out-patient orthopedic surgery.

Nature and prevalence of pain in Fabry disease and its response to enzyme replacement therapy--a retrospective analysis from the Fabry Outcome Survey.
Fabry disease is a multisystemic life-threatening lysosomal storage disorder caused by deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A. Symptoms of the disease may occur in different organs including kidney, heart, and the nervous system. ⋯ Pain is one of the most prevalent symptoms in Fabry disease with onset early in childhood. ERT with agalsidase alfa significantly reduces pain in this debilitating disorder.

Making pain assessment more accessible to children and parents: can greater involvement improve the quality of care?
To determine whether nursing and parental pain assessment documentation and analgesia administration increased with the use of a temporary tattoo of a pain intensity scale (TTPS) compared with a paper version of the pain scale (PPS). To document any adverse skin reactions from the use of the TTPS and to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the PPS and TTPS for use as postoperative pain assessment tools in the home and clinical setting. ⋯ The TTPS is a new method to engage children in pain assessment, which may have positive effects on the quality of postoperative pain assessment and management in hospital and home settings. Larger trials are needed to determine the effectiveness of the TTPS across all pediatric settings and for children with nonsurgical and also surgical pain. The findings from these pilot trials provide useful information for design and power estimation for further research in inpatient and home settings.
