The goal of multidisciplinary treatment for chronic pain is to help patients actively self-manage pain. In this study, we examined predictors of 2 measures of readiness to self-manage pain, namely the Precontemplation and Action subscales of the Pain Stages of Change Questionnaire. In particular, we examined the relative importance of experiences with pain and the primary care physician and beliefs about self-efficacy and pain control in predicting intention to self-manage pain (Precontemplation) and actual use of pain self-management strategies (Action). ⋯ The results of the study are placed within the context of the Motivational Model of Pain Self-Management and provide insight into factors that are associated with motivation to self-manage pain. Future directions for research are discussed with respect to perceptions of pain control and satisfaction with information from physicians, constructs which have previously been overlooked in research on motivation to self-manage pain.

Acupuncture for chronic low back pain in routine care: a multicenter observational study.
To investigate patient characteristics and outcomes after undergoing acupuncture treatment for chronic low back pain (cLBP) in Germany and to analyze chronification, pain grading, and depression as predictors for treatment outcomes. ⋯ Acupuncture treatment is associated with clinically relevant improvements in patients suffering from cLBP of varying degrees of chronification and/or severity.

Lacosamide in painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy: a phase 2 double-blind placebo-controlled study.
Peripheral diabetic neuropathy affects between 20% and 45% of patients with diabetes. ⋯ Lacosamide seems to attenuate pain in diabetic neuropathy in doses up to 400 mg/d and improves quality of life issues.

Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
The validity and reliability of the graphic rating scale and verbal rating scale for measuring pain across cultures: a study in Egyptian and Dutch women with rheumatoid arthritis.
To compare the validity and reliability of a graphic rating scale (GRS) and a verbal rating scale (VRS) for measuring pain intensity in young female Egyptian and Dutch patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). ⋯ The study confirmed that the GRS and VRS were reliable and valid in the total study cohort. Within the individual countries, the GRS seemed to perform better than the VRS.

Treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis with Botulinum toxin A: preliminary clinical results.
Based on recent results in chronic lateral epicondylitis we decided to investigate the efficacy of Botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) for treatment of chronic therapy resistant plantar fasciitis. Nine patients with an average duration of symptoms of 14 months and at least two prior conservative treatments received a one injection of 200 units of BTX-A (Dysport) subfascially into the painful area. The patients documented pain at rest and during weight-bearing after 2, 6, 10 and 14 weeks by a visual analogue scale. ⋯ The effect was still present at the latest follow-up of 14 weeks. Similarly, the pain at rest was reduced to less than half of the initial value at any follow-up. All patients were satisfied and did not require further treatment.
