Do Resting Plasma Beta-Endorphin Levels Predict Responses to Opioid Analgesics?
Clinically feasible predictors of opioid analgesic responses for use in precision pain medicine protocols are needed. This study evaluated whether resting plasma β-endorphin (BE) levels predicted responses to an opioid analgesic, and whether chronic pain status or sex moderated these effects. ⋯ BE was a predictor of morphine analgesia for only 3 out of 9 outcomes examined, with these effects moderated by chronic pain status but not sex. On the whole, results do not suggest that resting plasma BE levels are likely to be a clinically useful predictor of opioid analgesic responses.

Efficacy of Pregabalin in the Treatment of Prediabetic Neuropathic Pain.
We report the results of a pilot, enrichment-design, placebo-controlled crossover trial of pregabalin for the treatment of prediabetic small-fiber neuropathic pain. ⋯ This pilot study showed improvement of prediabetic neuropathic pain. Participants with higher pain scores at baseline had higher UENS scores and a lower IENFD. Limitations of the study include the small number of participants and the carry-over effect.

Efficacy of Cabbage Leaf Wraps in the Treatment of Symptomatic Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most common chronic diseases among older adults. This study aimed to test the effects of cabbage leaf wraps (CLWs) in the treatment of symptomatic OA. ⋯ CLWs are more effective for knee OA than UC, but not compared with diclofenac gel. Therefore, they might be recommended for patients with OA of the knee. Further research is warranted.

Does Topical Lidocaine Reduce the Pain associated with the Insertion of Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Prongs in Preterm Infants? A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Trial.
To evaluate the efficacy of topical lidocaine 2% gel in reducing the pain associated with the insertion of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) prongs in preterm infants. ⋯ Our data suggest that topical lidocaine did not reduce the pain associated with the insertion of nCPAP prongs in preterm infants. However, the trends for lower PIPP scores in the lidocaine group and the effect sizes for lidocaine on PIPP scores and salivary cortisol were large enough so that a large-scale randomized clinical trial is warranted to confirm or refute our results. Such a study should compare 2 or more active pain interventions during nCPAP application, rather than evaluating a single intervention versus placebo or no treatment.
