The Role of Illness Perceptions in Predicting Outcome Following Acute Whiplash Trauma - A Multicenter 12-month Follow-up Study.
To examine (1) whether the patients' perceptions of their symptoms immediately after the accident and at 3-month follow-up predict working ability and neck pain at 12-month follow-up and (2) the possible changes in patients' illness perceptions during the follow-up period. ⋯ The findings are in line with the common-sense model of illness and previous research demonstrating that patient's expectations for recovery and illness perceptions might influence the course after whiplash injury. Illness perceptions and expectations may provide a useful starting point for future interventions and be targeted in the prevention of chronicity.

The buprenorphine transdermal delivery system (BTDS) is indicated for reduction of pain in moderate to severe chronic low back pain (CLBP), which can affect patients' ability to perform routine activities of daily living (ADLs). This post hoc analysis of clinical trial data examines the impact of BTDS treatment on CLBP patients' ability to perform ADLs that relate to functioning with low back pain. ⋯ These results suggest that for patients with moderate to severe CLBP, 12 weeks use of BTDS improves the ability to carry out certain ADLs related to sleeping, lifting, bending, and working.

The First Postoperative Day: Prospective Evaluation of Pain in Adult Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery.
The aim of the study was to assess postoperative pain within the first 24 hours after otorhinolaryngologic surgery and to identify factors influencing postoperative pain. ⋯ Analgesia and perioperative pain management in otorhinolaryngologic surgery seems to be highly variable. After otorhinolaryngologic surgery many patients seem to receive less analgesia than needed or ineffective analgesic drug regimes.

Effectiveness of Duloxetine Compared to Pregabalin and Gabapentin in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Results From A German Observational Study.
This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of duloxetine (DLX) and the anticonvulsants pregabalin (PGB) and gabapentin (GBP) for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) in routine clinical care. ⋯ When compared with DLX, the low doses of PGB and GBP used in this noninterventional study might have contributed to the lower effectiveness found for both anticonvulsants in the treatment of patients with DPNP.

A Phase 2 Study of Lower-dose, Indomethacin Submicron Particle Capsules Demonstrates Early Onset of Acute Pain Relief.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are efficacious for the treatment of acute and chronic pain; however, they have the potential for serious adverse events (AEs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of investigational, lower-dose, indomethacin submicron particle capsules compared with placebo in a study of patients with postsurgical pain. ⋯ Lower-dose, indomethacin submicron particle capsules provide good overall pain relief in patients with postsurgical pain and are generally well tolerated. Indomethacin submicron particle capsules are a potentially promising option for treatment of acute pain and warrant further study.
