Case ReportsA 15-month-old boy with congenital duodenal stenosis due to food impaction.
Duodenal stenosis is a type of congenital intestinal atresia syndrome. Most patients are diagnosed during the neonatal period based on recurrent vomiting, but some cases develop symptoms at an older age. We report a case with an unusual pathogenic mechanism: sudden ileus due to food impaction. ⋯ Congenital membranous duodenal stenosis and impaction of a shimeji mushroom into the narrow section of the duodenum was recognized upon endoscopy. Dilatation was successful and restenosis was not seen. Food impaction is a rare (but important) initial event in congenital duodenal stenosis, and this disorder should be included in the differential diagnosis, especially for infants/toddlers with recurrent vomiting that develops at the time of eating solid and more diverse types of food.

Recognizing victims of human trafficking in the pediatric emergency department.
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery that is rapidly expanding in the United States and throughout the world. It is a crime under both the United States and international law. ⋯ Healthcare practitioners may be the only professionals who come into contact with victims if they present for medical care. This article will describe human trafficking and its potential victims, as well as guide medical management and access to services that will ensure their safety and restore their freedom.

Respiratory distress and stridor are common presenting symptoms for children in the emergency department. Most of these children will have common illnesses such as bronchiolitis or croup. Clinicians, however, must maintain a broad differential diagnosis and a healthy skepticism in the approach to each child's case so as not to miss uncommon or atypical presentations. We describe the case of a child with stridor in whom an airway hemangioma was ultimately diagnosed.

Case ReportsDiffuse Corneal Abrasion After Ocular Exposure to Laundry Detergent Pod.
Although ocular injury from alkaline household cleaning products is well described, there is less known about the significance and extent of injury with ocular exposure to detergent pods. We report a 12-month-old with diffuse corneal abrasion caused by ocular contact with a laundry detergent pod. In addition to the known risks with aspiration with detergent pods, the potential for severe ocular injury is important for parents and clinicians to recognize. Children with ocular exposure to detergent pods should seek immediate medical care.
