Observational StudyClinical Symptoms and Adverse Effects Associated With Energy Drink Consumption in Adolescents.
The aims of the study were to determine the prevalence of energy drink consumption by adolescents, to identify associated clinical symptoms and adverse effects, and to gain an understanding to the motivation behind its consumption. ⋯ Clarifying common misconceptions associated with energy drink consumption, especially in high-risk adolescents and frequent energy drink consumers, may decrease the frequency of symptoms experienced by adolescents, such as headache and difficulty breathing, requiring medical evaluation.

Home Fire Safety Practices and Smoke Detector Program Awareness in an Urban Pediatric Emergency Department Population.
Risk factors for residential fire death (young age, minority race/ethnicity, and low socioeconomic status) are common among urban pediatric emergency department (ED) patients. Community-based resources are available in our region to provide free smoke detector installation. The objective of our study was to describe awareness of these resources and home fire safety practices in this vulnerable population. ⋯ In this urban pediatric ED population, there is limited awareness of community-based resources but high rates of interest in participating once informed. Whereas the self-reported prevalence of home smoke detectors is high in our study population, other fire safety practices are suboptimal.

Case ReportsFatal Cardiac Arrest in 2 Children: Possible Role of Ondansetron.
Ondansetron is commonly used to treat vomiting in gastroenteritis, but has a United States Food and Drug Administration black box warning for risk of Q wave to T wave time interval (QT) prolongation. We report 2 pediatric cases of fatal refractory cardiac arrest after administration of ondansetron. ⋯ Patients may have hidden risk factors that, together with ondansetron, could result in a proarrhythmic state that could lead to adverse effects, such as arrhythmias. Administration of ondansetron should be individualized and used cautiously in patients with risk factors for arrhythmia.

Review Case ReportsPoint-of-Care Ultrasound to Diagnose Infantile Parotid Hemangioma.
Soft tissue masses are common in the pediatric population and may represent a broad range of conditions. Point-of-care ultrasound can be used for rapid visualization and assessment of soft tissue masses in the emergency setting. We report a case of a pediatric head and neck mass in which point-of-care ultrasound was used to identify an infantile parotid hemangioma.
