Pediatric Airway Management and Prehospital Patient Safety: Results of a National Delphi Survey by the Children's Safety Initiative-Emergency Medical Services for Children.
The objective of this study was to determine what aspects of prehospital pediatric airway management may contribute to patient safety events. ⋯ This national Delphi survey identified lack of experience with pediatric airway management and challenges in decision making in advanced airway management as high risk for safety events, with endotracheal intubation as the most likely of these.

Development of a Model to Measure Emergency Department Staffing Limitations.
The optimal staffing model for emergency departments (EDs) is not known. Improving staffing could lead to more timely, efficient, and effective care. We created a model of staffing to identify times of staffing limitation by provider type. ⋯ Times identified as space and staffing limited were associated with longer LOS. This computer model could be used to rapidly identify targeted staffing needs and then measure the effect of modifying staffing.

Case ReportsEvaluation and Monitoring of a Child With Hydrocarbon Pneumonitis Using Point-of-Care Lung Ultrasound in the Pediatric Emergency Department.
A well-appearing 3-year-old boy presented to the pediatric emergency department 2 hours after a presumed hydrocarbon ingestion. He was referred to the emergency department by his pediatrician after consultation with the local poison control center after possibly ingesting ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) fragrance oil. ⋯ Point-of-care lung ultrasound identified focal hydrocarbon pneumonitis in the right lung and demonstrated resolution of these findings. Utilization of point-of-care ultrasound resulted in a shorter emergency department length of stay and the avoidance of radiation exposure from serial chest x-rays.

Essentials of PEM Fellowship: Part 5: Scholarship Prepares Fellows to Lead as Pediatric Emergency Specialists.
The aim of this article was to discuss the current landscape in pediatric emergency medicine fellowship training for scholarship training and provide an overview of the resources and general strategies required to prepare fellows for their careers. ⋯ This article is the fifth in a 7-part series that aims to comprehensively describe the current state and future directions of pediatric emergency medicine fellowship training from the essential requirements to considerations for successfully administering and managing a program to the careers that may be anticipated upon program completion. This article focuses on scholarship training.

A neonate developed oral lesions during treatment of thrush with gentian violet. The medication was applied by his mother according to the instructions on the bottle she bought over the counter. The literature is briefly reviewed and it is suggested that the availability of this solution without medical supervision should be reconsidered.
